Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group):

 

The Applied Mechanics Modeling Scientist is responsible for developing and applying modeling tools for solving process and product design problems. Candidate will develop, validate and apply numerical models to solve dynamic impact, nonlinear FEA, fracture mechanics and other applied mechanics problems. These models will help to understand physics, generate new concepts and study design options for different Corning businesses. Candidate must have an in-depth knowledge solid mechanics, heat transfer and a strong expertise in numerical simulation.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

 

1. Develop and apply numerical models to solve process and product design problems.

2. Advance our capabilities in process optimization and product design via modeling & experimentation.

3. Collaborate with other scientists and engineers in R, D, & E for problem solving.

4. Communicate modeling results/conclusions to drive project decisions.

 

Travel requirements (please note if international): Expected travel time <10% (domestic).

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40 hours per week but some flexibility is required.

 

Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration):

PhD in Mechanical Engineering, civil engineering, materials sciences, or related areas with emphasis on solid mechanics and Finite Element Analysis.

More than 5 years of experience in solid mechanics and Finite Element Analysis required, but exceptions can be made for strong candidates.

 

Required Skills (These are skills that candidates must possess):

1. Strong background in solid mechanics and FEA. Deep understanding of solid mechanics concept and theory.

2. Experience with commercial FEA software including but not limited to ABAQUS, LS-DYNA or ANSYS.

3. Experience with modeling dynamic impact problem, material nonlinearities.

4. Ability to understand and breakdown real world problems into solvable modeling objectives. 5. Problem solving skills and strong engineering intuition. Results-oriented thinking.

6. Ability to interact with people of diverse backgrounds.

 

 

 

Desired Skills (these are the skills that would be nice for candidates to possess):

1. Problem solving skills with developing hypothesis on product or process related issues and effectively design approaches to find the root cause(s).

2. Experience in experiments and equipment design work, directly or in a collaboration.

3. Experience in fracture mechanics.

4. Knowledge and experience in brittle material failure analysis and testing.

1. Must be self-motivated and demonstrate strong curiosity of the technical work.

2. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

3. Respect others and be willing to work across diverse cultures and backgrounds.

4. Able to work both independently and with a team.
