Purpose of the Position:

 

Technology leadership for the development, optimization and delivery of key technologies needed for novel near-eye display product solutions:

  • Glass materials and a variety of glass product configurations including glass development from composition, melting & forming technologies, post forming processes to achieve target material properties, and finishing technologies to deliver final glass product specification at cost target.
  • Optical substrate and component configurations
  • Optical coatings on a variety of substrate materials
  • Optical modeling of component-level performance of devices incorporating the above solutions
  • Metrology systems and procedures to quantify product-relevant performance
  • Reliability of near-eye display products and component technologies
  • Benchmarking performance of competitive systems and alternative technologies
  • Establishing and qualifying the supply chain partners as appropriate
  • Lead global technology deliver across R, D and E, with deep technical engagement with Manufacturing and supply chain partners
  • Ownership of cost model and cost reduction portfolio
  • Lead and deliver technology strategy and roadmaps to meet the goals and intent of the business strategy

 

Lead technical customer engagements for existing customers in collaboration with commercial counterparts including:

  • Provide technical leadership Corning product design-in activities at targeted customers and provide needed technical expertise on our products and technology solutions
  • Ensure deep engagement with customers and ecosystem with joint experiments and programs
  • Supporting customer requested product testing and product trouble-shooting
  • Develop and document thorough understanding of customers’ roadmap for all segments, applications, products and attributes; Integrate into business technology roadmap and product line plans
  • Develop and document thorough understanding of customers’ processes from a product, design development and manufacturing perspective to extract insight for creating value in Corning product definition and development
  • Understanding customer requirements and translating these requirements to product specifications and performance attributes
  • Define product performance targets, justification and clear prioritization (attributes to win, threshold attributes, future differentiators, etc.)
  • Effective and Efficient Transfer of new products and processes from research to development and engineering to manufacturing.
  • Overall technical program management of multiple, parallel work-steams and multi-discipline technical teams with budget and resource responsibility.

  

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and execution of technology development programs and projects
  • Hands-on technical work as necessary in support of development programs and projects
  • Establish deep understanding of Augmented Reality ecosystem, including markets, products, and technology leaders
  • Develop product and technology roadmaps near-eye display technology roadmap; identify how Corning Precision Glass Solutions capabilities can address emerging needs related AR/MR
  • Develop extensive network across the industry; Initiate and drive external technical partnerships
  • Customer engagements with commercial counterparts
  • Required interactions with research, development, engineering, and operations
  • IP portfolio and strategy to support technology development
  • Develop and maintain competitive technology landscape and assessment
  • Budget/spending management.

 

Education & Experience: Ph.D. or M.S. required, in material science or related field or optical science/engineering with a materials emphasis.

At least 10 years of industrial R&D experience with at least 3-5 years of technology leadership and management experience.

 

Required Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of and experience working with optical materials, materials processing and their use in novel optical components and systems.
  • Strong knowledge of and experience working with a variety of optical material disciplines including optical glasses.
  • Demonstrated technology development leadership, execution, delivery, and management experience.
  • Ability to identify and lead the execution the critical path on complex and convoluted initiatives.
  • Experience in leading global cross-functional and diverse technology teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to do hands-on technical work; willing and able to lead modeling and experimental problem solving and troubleshooting by example.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with customers to define customer needs/requirements, translation of those to product specifications and attributes, and providing customer product support at accelerated pace. Very responsive and engaging with customers to address challenges and to support product adoption.
  • Demonstrated experience leading customers through technology trade-off and implementation decisions resulting in launched consumer electronics products.
  • Ability to establish and foster technology engagement with supply chain partners to deliver capabilities and products.
  • FMEA and MEE expertise and experience.

Work Schedule: 40+, flex-time.

 

Travel Requirements: Domestic and international travel required (25% routine, up to 50% at times to support customer integration of Corning technologies).
