Scope of Position:

  • This is a Project Lead position that requires strong technical and project leadership. As part of a global team, this position is responsible for delivering Automated Control System solutions to Corning’s Manufacturing businesses for best in class product.  Successful candidates can manage and support the design, build and installation of complex systems of controls.  Project timelines range from 6 months to several years.  This controls leader will work to assure new and modified equipment meets or exceeds the manufacturing requirements set forth by the business while assuring adherence to the Corning’s strict safety guidelines.  

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Develop Equipment Scope and Specifications based on business/division requirements with a keen focus on ROI and TCO.
  • Develop high level Control Solution Architecture, engineering resource requirements, manage team workload.
  • Support/mentor junior engineers on the project.
  • Ensure Hardware & Software design reviews, FAT, Installation, SAT, equipment Startup meet equipment scope and specifications
  • Provide technical leadership and expertise to design, develop and deploy integrated manufacturing systems to global manufacturing facilities 
  • Participate in all phases of projects including design, vendor selection, integration and testing, installation, production start-up support, training of plant personnel and technology transfer. 
  • Interface with external system integrators and machine builders to successfully deliver fully integrated process equipment including standard interfacing to the plant manufacturing execution system (MES) and data historian. 
  • Provide discipline leadership of Control Hardware design, PLC Software, SCADA and Data collection design
  • Lead construction, test, installation and debug of control systems at domestic and international manufacturing sites. 
  • Work closely with Technology Development, Manufacturing, Division Engineering, and IT to industrialize and standardize equipment and architectures for consistent data flow and reporting among processes and regions.
  • Adhere to the Software Architectures and Coding Standards of the Company and Business/Division.  Stay up to date on industry trends and best practices. 
  • Provide system integration requirements to satisfy process and manufacturing requirements 
  • Generate and interpret electrical drawings for systems design including control panel layouts, component documentation, and schematics. Participate in the initial electrical design layouts. Review electrical drawing packages for conformance to Corning standards.
  • Provide troubleshooting support for equipment and process issues during equipment installation and start-up phases, identify root cause and implement corrective actions. 
  • Ensure proactive safety measures for all equipment and processes. Identify and correct potential safety or environmental issues using NEC, NFPA, ISO 13849 and other pertinent safety codes.  Ensure safety procedures, such as Lock-Out Tag-Out are always followed (lead by example). 
  • Create/update documentation for release to production including machine specifications, operating procedures and drawing packages. 
  • Train engineering, maintenance and operations people how to use and maintain systems.  
  • Visibly support the establishment and maintenance of a safe work environment.

  • >40% travel domestic and International

 

Required Skills:

  • Minimum of 5 years of automation experience
  • Project Initiation and High-Level Automation Control Architecture design.
  • Project management including technical and resource leadership.
  • Control system (PLC, motion control, safety devices, high level languages) programming skills. 
  • Experience integrating field devices for flow control, material handling, metering, motion control, temperature control, flow control, and associated safety systems into an overall systems package enabling a fully functional equipment platform.
  • Solid electrical background
  • Comfortable with electrical system design including control panel layouts, component selection, and schematics.
  • Understands regulations applicable to area of expertise and works to ensure compliance (NEC, NFPA, CE, ISO 13849, etc.) 
  • Familiar with Risk Assessment and Safety into equipment designs. 
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in technical project teams in leadership and team member roles.
  • General computer and networking knowledge

 

Desired Skills:

  • Project management experience, including developing project scope, budgets and schedules
  • 5+ years’ work experience in controls systems design, engineering and/or manufacturing. 
  • Experience with Rockwell, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Omron PLC and control system products and programming. 
  • Experience with process controls, automation, packing, robots
  • Experience with iFix Scada software and OSI PI data historian
  • Drafting ability with Solidworks Electrical and/or AutoCAD Electrical
  • Data retrieval, plotting and analysis
  • Strong communication and presentation skills

 

Required Education:  

  • BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or Mechatronics required.
