Role Purpose

The intern will support efforts to generate and characterize novel glassy materials. The candidate will utilize melt chemistry and analytical skills to devise experiments, and extract and collect data to produce reports in collaboration with a larger team of scientists and technicians.  This role provides learning and practical experience in a high-tech industrial environment. The intern will actively contribute to cutting-edge research efforts within the Technology Community.

Key Responsibilities

The intern will perform background literature, patent and internal reports searches to oversee experimental work from start to finish, including:

  • Research scientific literature and phase diagrams;
  • Learn new techniques and methods as needed to support project objectives;
  • Oversee the progression of samples through the generation and characterization pipelines;
  • Build fundamental understanding of material properties;
  • Document the results of the research by the end of the internship and present a final report highlighting progress made.

Experiences/Education - Required

  • College student (preferably graduate student) pursuing Material Science, Chemistry, Physics, Geochemistry or a similar discipline combining the fundamental understanding of linkages between physical properties and material chemistry.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail;
  • Enthusiasm for new topics and ideas;
  • Expertise in glass or melt chemistry;
  • Proficiency in analytical techniques for various physical properties of glassy materials;
  • Excellent ability to effectively present information in both written and verbal forms;
  • Experience working in a research lab and writing reports or publishing scientific papers;
  • Must be available for 10 weeks during Summer 2026 with a graduation date of December 2026 or later;
  • Be willing to work in person in Painted Post, NY.

Experiences/Education - Desired

  • Familiarity with materials characterization (e.g., optical properties, mechanical properties, analytical techniques);
  • Design of experiments;
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.

​The range for this position is $1,635.00 - $3,185.00 biweekly.  Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
