Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • M-F 8am – 5pm
  • Duration: Summer 2022, 8-12 weeks

 

Education and Experience

  • Required: Student enrolled in a MS or PhD program.
  • Area of study: Chemistry/Physics, Materials Science or Chemical Engineer

 

Scope of Position:

  • You will support internal Engineering, Development, and Research projects focused on chemical and optical spectroscopy to enable product and process understanding and to solve chemistry related problems. In this role, you will be responsible for supporting spectroscopy related projects currently underway in the group. The position requires expertise in chemistry and/or material science. The specific project role for the summer will be tailored to match your interests.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Responsibilities will include investigating spectroscopy techniques for material understanding and fit for use in Corning Inc. businesses and RD&E efforts.
  • Activities may include: experimentation; laboratory work; data analysis; Chemical and spectroscopic measurements; all geared towards fundamental understanding of material and surface chemistry and applications to Corning Inc businesses.

 

Required Skills:

  • We require a high level of technical curiosity while enjoying problem solving and working well within teams.
  • State-of-the art experimental/ theoretical and interpretive skills to technical problems
  • We require good technical writing and presentation skills.
  • Familiar with chemical instrumentation and lab safety (Examples: FTIR, UV-Vis, Raman, Fluorescence, SEM, microscopy, etc.)
  • Fundamental understanding of spectroscopy
  • Chemical problem solving and experiment design

  • Problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with Six Sigma DMAIC principles
  • Collaboration in a multicultural environment
