Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group): The Coating Formulation Scientist will be responsible for applying their expertise and experience in the area of UV formulation science to deliver new material solutions to the Corning Optical Fiber and Cable business. The candidate will also be expected to provide support to Engineering and Manufacturing to solve issues with production UV coatings as they arise. The candidate will work on cross-functional project teams and will be expected to set the technical direction and lead the development effort for their part of the assigned project. They will also be expected to provide their expertise and experience when appropriate to support the overall project objectives. Technical report writing and presentation of experimental work to technical teams and leadership is expected. Contribution to intellectual property is also an expectation in this role. 

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

Carry out all work in a safe manner and use required PPE. Carry out early stage development work in the area of UV formulation science to advance progress on assigned projects. Identify and define key problems to solve. Develop and execute approaches to solve them. The candidate will be expected to take a hand-on approach and spend significant time in the lab. Deliver practical solutions along with fundamental understanding through deep technical knowledge and rigorous experimentation. Document and present work in both written and oral formats. Contribution to intellectual property is expected. Provide guidance to technicians working on the project as deemed necessary.  

 

Travel Requirements (please note if international): Up to 20% travel, primarily in North America   Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: Mon-Fri 8a-5p / 40 hrs per week.  

 

Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration)

Ph.D in Organic or Polymer chemistry with 1 - 3 years industrial experience or Master’s Degree in Organic or Polymer chemistry with 2 - 5 years of industrial experience.  

 

Required Skills (These are skills that candidates MUST possess)

Demonstrated ability to solve difficult technical problems and deliver practical solutions that meet all application requirements along with the fundamental understanding of the chemistry that drives the performance. Demonstrated ability in the area of UV coating formulation science and curing processes. Experience with coating characterization methods including tensile property testing, viscosity, DMA, FTIR, etc. Proficiency in polymer structure-property relationships.  

 

Desired Skills (These are skills that would be nice for candidates to possess) Basic knowledge of alternative coating chemistries and coating processes Project leadership experience.  Experience in the area of optical fiber coatings  

 

Soft Skills (Communication/Team/Leadership) Strong communication skills along with effective presentation and technical writing skills Ability to work in a collaborative manner in a multi-disciplinary team environment Ability to work independently and lead technical work. Effective time management and handling multiple priorities Detail oriented and self-start
