Our Global Contract Manufacturing Operations Team is looking for a backfill of existing role to continue to provide Contract Manufacturing service support in North America. Initially, for the first 18-24 months, the role will focus on specific contract manufacturing sourcing projects, primarily for the Life Sciences division. This will constitute 80% of the work over this period. During this time the role will also be instrumental in helping the Global Contract Manufacturing Operations Manager develop the long-term strategy for Contract Manufacturing Operations in North America. The incumbent would then be expected to be a key person in the implementation and ongoing development of the N.A. CM Operations team.


  • Conduct strategic reviews on our existing and future potential manufacturing requirements in the region, including high-level assessment of opportunities to utilize external manufacturing or asset lean product production in Corning’s value chains.
  • Work under direction of the Corning Life Sciences Contract Manufacturing Manager to deliver, on-time and in full, specific sourcing projects as directed.
  • Act as regional leader for external manufacturing supplier identification, development, management with regional service providers as required by Corning’s business units.
  • In conjunction with GSM global resources - identify tools and processes required to support external manufacturing in the region.
  • Develop deployment plan for tools and processes in region.


Context/Environment: The role will work on a range of projects mainly for Life Science division (80%) with potential opportunities working with different Corning business units. This will involve the sourcing and/or outsourcing of specific components or finished products and will be the lead for supplier identification, contract negotiation and ramp phase of the projects. He/She will work closely with various stakeholders i.e. regulatory, quality, engineering, commercial, supply chain etc to ensure successful implementation and launch. Additionally, the incumbent will work with the different Corning businesses to identify their long-term needs for CM support in N.A. and to work with the Global CM lead and rest of the team to determine the long-term support model and strategy. Subject to defining an appropriate strategy and plan, the incumbent would be expected to play a major role in the implementation and delivery of the strategy.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience Required:

  • B.S degree in mechanical engineering or business discipline, ideally MBA.
  • 10+ years’ experience in implementing and managing contract manufacturing operations, preferably in life science, electronics or highly engineered product environment
  • Strong knowledge of supply chain operations with demonstrated experience of problem solving and leadership
  • Ability to lead difficult negotiations and develop win-win solutions for Corning and suppliers.
  • Technical sourcing or engineering experience preferred
  • Good knowledge of contracting and purchasing terms and conditions
  • Ability to manage varied and demanding workload across multiple businesses and time zones
  • 6-Sigma or Performance Excellence program training
  • Worked in a multi-cultural, multinational environment preferably with overseas travel or extended work period

Key Success Factors:

  • Provide leadership and/or support for existing or new contract manufacturing operations.
  • Identification of new opportunities for use of external manufacturing or asset lean manufacturing in North America.
  • Develop supply base of external/contract manufacturing suppliers and relationships in North America as required by Corning’s business units.
  • Manage and further develop contract manufacturing tools and processes and train BU and GSM function personal.
  • On-time and within-budget delivery of projects in support of North America GSM/Mfg. strategy implementation.
  • Develop strong relationships with key functional and Business Unit leaders across regions.

Additional Information: The role will involve a fair amount of travel both domestically and internationally. Estimated travel time around 20% - 30%.
