Role Purpose
The primary responsibility of the Counsel, Litigation will be the management of complex litigation and pre-litigation advice with respect to complex matters with focus on litigation disputes. Responsible for advising clients on general legal issues and directing litigation.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Advise on litigation and pre-litigation matters globally.
- Assess liabilities and reduce risk through pre-litigation advice or litigation.
- Act as the primary interface between the company and law firms in litigation matters.
- Manage outside counsel prior to and during litigation to ensure high quality work, cost effective use of resources and appropriate focus on successful strategy.
- Set strategy and develop substantive position taken by counsel. Review position taken by counsel, edit briefs/arguments submitted by counsel, and analyze information from witnesses and documents.
- Supervise processes to ensure counsel get all available, relevant data.
- Ensure the best evidence and arguments are presented to the court or other authority.
- Prepare witnesses for testimony.
- Be responsible for defense of claims and coordinate overall strategy.
- Identify strategic alternatives/options for the business relative to litigation and dispute resolution.
- Keep business clients updated and engaged, where needed.
- Prepare litigation matters for trial or negotiate favorable resolutions.
- Manage insurance coverage disputes.
- Participate in internal projects related to cost management of outside counsel and other Law Department initiatives to reduce and/or control expense.
Experiences/Education - Required
- JD from an accredited law school
- Member in good standing of at least one State Bar Required
- 5+ years of experience in litigation with considerable general litigation
- In-depth understanding of litigation procedures and practices, including general litigation and state/federal regulations.
- Strong leadership, organization, and planning abilities, with a demonstrated track record of on-time delivery within budget and the capability to drive projects to successful conclusions while handling changing priorities.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, influencing, and negotiating skills, coupled with effective advocacy abilities.
- Proficiency in writing clear and effective briefs and strategy memos for management, with the ability to assess and quantify risk.
- Science, engineering, or math undergraduate education is a plus, or a demonstrated ability to quickly learn and understand diverse technologies.
- Ability to lead international teams across multiple initiatives that involve numerous lines of business, geographies, and cultures, with creativity in problem-solving and ascertaining trends and significant issues from data.
- Strong attention to detail, collaborative mindset, and comfort in working with teams, while being a self-starter capable of motivating others.
- Experience in keeping stakeholders informed and building consensus.
- Some travel is required (domestic & international), and the amount may vary month-to-month but is unlikely to exceed 15% on an annual basis
Experiences/Education - Desired
- Experience with patent litigation
- Experience in a legal department, law firm, or government preferred

The range for this position is $155,610.00 - $213,965.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
