Purpose of the Position:

The successful candidate would work in the Advanced Optics (AO) Development group of the Science and Technology Division. Advanced Optics is a global leader in providing cutting-edge material and optical solutions that serve a variety of commercial markets including semiconductor manufacturing, microfabrication, consumer electronics, and more. Corning’s unmatched expertise in specialty glass and optical physics results in a diverse set of advanced optical products and components. The intersection of optics with novel glass materials has created unique opportunities to expand our markets. Value-added features on glass result in light-matter interaction challenges that need to be addressed. One such challenge is understanding and characterizing the visual perception of the interaction of light with optical features and functionalities. The role requires fusion of biology, physics, and engineering principles. The Optical Physics and Systems group within AO Development combines deep understanding of various optics disciplines, such as geometrical and physical optics, to design and develop new advantaged optical products. We are seeking a Human Visual Perception scientist to be a key team member to develop the display technologies of the future. This Scientist will be the lead subject matter expert for the corporation and play a key role in integrating this expertise into the product development cycles across various businesses. This high-visibility and high-impact role will help accelerate the development pace of various display-related products by leveraging the fundamentals of human visual perception. The Scientist will join a dynamic, cross-functional group (including Research, Development and Engineering) that supports various business units across the corporation. The Scientist will be responsible for understanding fundamentals and conducting experiments that evaluate product performance, determine specifications, develop and/or identify metrics relevant to various display products, and provide insights into the ramifications of various display/display component features and enhancements to aid the design teams.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Design, conduct and analyze human perception experiments to evaluate, meet, or propose specifications, including working with customers and stakeholders to interactively improve systems, processes, or designs.
  • Advocate for and lead correct and impactful application of human perception to the design, fabrication, and metrology processes of new product development.
  • Interact with stakeholders to develop system requirements, establish design constraints, and set priorities.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to provide guidance and suggestions for solving problems or improving designs, metrology or processes based on visual perception expertise.
  • Master new design and analysis tools.
  • Lead brainstorming and other ideation activities related to system design, engineering, and measurement technologies relevant to visual perception.
  • Communicate testing results and project progress to team members, stakeholders, and leadership.
  • Partner with outside suppliers, universities, and contractors to develop novel technologies, techniques/processes and instruments, and assist in industrialization of these developments.
  • Understand and participate in road-mapping activities and help define technology direction.
  • Develop value proposition, generate white papers, and support customer technical interactions.
  • Stay abreast with industrial trends and developments by attending tradeshows and conferences.
  • Document knowledge in formal and informal reports.
