Scope of Position:

Corning’s Automotive Futures team is developing innovative products to position Corning for a long-term leadership role in the Automotive market.  The team is seeking a development engineer with a broad materials science and materials processing background to assist in developing and characterizing potential product solutions. This position would work closely with technology management and program management to execute upon and assess solutions, in addition to performing other tasks comprising a 'product specialist' function.  

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

(1) Assist in the development and evaluation of product solutions comprised of inorganic and/or polymeric materials. The product solutions may have performance requirements spanning the optical, mechanical, environmental, chemical and electrical domains

(2) Develop and/or define process flows and processing methods/parameters which will enable successful realization of the product design. Processing areas of interest may include glass forming and secondary glass processing/finishing; adhesive bonding/lamination; thin-film coating deposition; and more

(3) Identify design and/or processing risks and early product “fitness-for-use” attribute risks using a methodical approach such as failure mode & effects analysis (FMEA). Develop and execute workstreams to mitigate design/processing risks and enable reliability growth

(4) Participate in customer meetings, as requested, to understand customer requirements and translate them into differentiated technical solutions

(5) Support the development of product technical value proposition

(6) Perform tasks of a "product specialist" nature; such tasks may include: development of product demonstration kits and displays; arranging details of customer visits and team events; ordering and shipping parts and samples; and managing the storage, retrieval, transportation and inventory of experimental and product samples  

 

Travel Requirements:

  • Up to 20%, domestically or internationally.
  • Travel is not anticipated routinely, but there may be periods where travel is required regarding (for example) process development, technology transfer, supply chain engagement, third-party testing, or product promotion

 

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • 40+ hours per week with typical on-site hours of ~ 8AM-5PM. Evening hours may periodically be required for meetings/calls across international time zones

 

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in materials science, mechanics of materials, or optics required. Masters or Ph.D. degree preferred  

 

Required Skills:

(1) Strong technical acumen regarding material behaviors and material processing/property/performance relationships

(2) Effective communication and presentation of technical concepts and performance data to internal teams, and potentially to external customers and partners

(3) Coordination of product testing and evaluation with internal and/or external laboratories, from experiment design to data analysis/interpretation; strong and broad knowledge of material characterization methodologies

(4) Ability to maintain thorough documentation of the product development process including as relates to technical decision-making and intellectual property generation  

 

Desired Skills:

(1) Working knowledge of reliability engineering and reliability science principles and practices, and their role in the product development process

(2) Prior experience working on a project spanning the full product development cycle (concept/design to hand-off to manufacturing)

(3) Familiarity with automotive standards and qualification practices

(4) Familiarity with the implementation of process quality architecture and experience partnering/collaborating with the functions of manufacturing engineering, quality engineering, product engineering, etc.
