Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group): The Development Engineer is responsible for process and equipment safety, quality, capability and capacity in support of a glass finishing development line. Responsibilities include process development for improvement in product attributes, fundamental learnings and cost to support customer sample making and production scale-up; establishing/maintaining process discipline and controls for quality and development operations; supporting research and development objectives; maintaining and improving lab equipment; and, leading continues improvement workstreams. Scope will include process, product and/or equipment projects and general line support/maintenance. The position reports into CPPD (Corning Product and Process Development) Ultra Thin Glass Finishing Lead and supports development activities related to glass finishing technology delivery to multiple businesses.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

• Owns processes and equipment related to glass finishing; delivers best practices of safety, process control, equipment maintenance & operations are implemented. Glass finishing processes include, but are not limited to chemical etching, ion exchange, washing, coatings, edge finishing and measurements.

• Leads/supports improvement projects; supports technology transfers and experiments from research to development to engineering

• Key focus on process learnings for transfer into manufacturing

• Supports product, process and equipment activities related to customer demo & prototype builds

• Implements and maintains robust problem solving and operational methodologies (MEE, DOE, SPC, capacity planning, SOPs, SOSs, change control)

• Designs and executes process and product experiments

• Capable using statistical software (JMP, Minitab, Origin or Excel) for data analysis

• Maintains equipment including ownership of maintenance, troubleshooting, upgrades

• Writes and maintains process procedures and operational documentation

• Maintains & improves process control systems; implement SPC methodology on a development line

• Works with external vendors and internal partners to maintain and improve processes and equipment

• Implements capital equipment improvements


Travel Requirements (please note if international): Limited to 15%.

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: Standard full-time daytime hours. Potential for emergency/on-call weekend/night support


Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration)

• Education BS or MS in engineering (chemical, mechanical preferred)

• Experience: 3~7+ years of development and/or engineering; experience in maintaining lab operations, technology transfers and pilot/prototyping engineering preferred.


Required Skills (These are skills that candidates MUST possess)

• High level of commitment to meeting stretch goals set within dynamic early stage business environment; proven ability to deliver results in highly changeable environments.

• Demonstrated ability to deliver in at least one of the technology fields related to chemical etching, ion exchange, washing, coatings, edge finishing and measurements.

• Application of fundamentals of process engineering, manufacturing excellence and quality architecture. Highly skilled in statistics, DOE, SPC creation and driving process rigor within flexible development line

• Strong technical and engineering background to allow impact across a range of material, product and processes.

• Experience working in a real manufacturing environment to ensure practicality of solutions and adequate representation of the needs of the ultimate manufacturing function

• Use of structured problem solving and decision-making processes.

• Ability to prioritize multiple tasks from multiple customers

• Willingness to look outside Corning for solutions; experience in doing so a plus

• Drive for results; such as the need to ship samples and product
