Requisition Number: 46669

Corning is one of the world’s leading innovators in materials science. For more than 160 years, Corning has applied its unparalleled expertise in specialty glass, ceramics, and optical physics to develop products that have created new industries and transformed people’s lives.

At Corning, our growth is fueled by a commitment to innovation. We succeed through sustained investment in research & development, a unique combination of material and process innovation, and close collaboration with customers to solve tough technology challenges. We are a four-time National Medal of Technology winner thanks to our technology leadership and R&D environment, which attract and enable the best scientific minds in the world. This pipeline of talent has brought life-changing innovation to your fingertips for more than 160 years.

Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group): Primary function is to lead slurry coating activities of monolithic substrates/filters with catalytic powdered materials within the Application Fundamental ETD program. The role of this individual is to develop into a subject matter expert in catalyst slurry coating of CET products, the process used to deposit such coatings and corresponding performance testing. A second area of responsibility for this position will be to oversee product characterizations (e.g. microscopy, SEM, material properties, etc.) and perform failure mode analysis of provided samples. Creating and maintaining a database of results and clearly reporting findings via reports to internal and external teams. This task will require significant collaboration with colleagues around the world. The successful candidate will be comfortable working with technical product development groups, research scientists, all Corning R&D labs, engineering, commercial and possibly supply chain partners.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

For each project in which this individual will be involved, she/he will interact with a customer (new product project, their manager or directly with Engineering or Commercial groups for market support. It is expected that this role will require a self-driven individual who can be proactive and work independently to define and execute specific objectives. This role would require the daily ability to:

• define detailed experimental plans enabling them to reach key project objectives

• identify the proper process or measurement to use; or develop new processes if needed

• conduct experiments (or supervise technicians conducting such experiments) to gain fundamental or empirical knowledge to address the technical challenges

• use various analytical material characterization tools/methods to analyze field return samples to resolve the performance concerns

• perform data analysis, interpretation & define next steps

• present results and when applicable make recommendations to projects to improve performance based on above

• develop new intellectual property Experimental plans to be related to external coating characterization, internal coating process and characterization. General management of failure mode analysis and product/material characterization will be required, where this role will oversee the planning of such product evaluations and the definition of what characterization methods would be appropriate; as well as interpretation of measurement results and reporting findings to various teams on a regular basis.

Additional responsibilities may include management of labs (2-3) and a group of technicians (2-4) including coaching & mentoring, work plan development, project meetings.

Travel Requirements (please note if international): Variable but expectation is <5%, possibly international

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40+ hours per week with flex-time

Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration) MS Chemical Engineering, Material Science, Chemistry or similar degree (PhD highly preferred)

Preference for experience with slurry type of coating process & within an industrial environment, and materials synthesis and characterization.

Required Skills (These are skills that candidates MUST possess)

• Ability to perform experimental design and analysis of data associated with catalyst slurry coatings and material processing. Ability to work in a hands-on environment with such processes.

• Experience in catalytic powder materials slurry preparation and tuning of the its rheology by using organic/inorganic additives.

• Technical familiarity handling powder processes

• Familiarity with laboratory test methods used for materials property testing.

• Experience with analytical characterization techniques such as SEM, XRD, FTIR, TGA-DSC, ICP, and XRF, etc.

• Ability to work across organizational boundaries from research to manufacturing

• Ability to multitask & drive several different studies at the same time

• Strong communication skills and comfort in facilitation of technical personnel

• Ability to work in an ambiguously defined project environment

Desired Skills (These are skills that would be nice for candidates to possess)

• Technical knowledge in the area of slurry coatings and processes; along with corresponding performance testing

• Understanding of kinetics, heterogeneous catalysis, porous media, coating dynamics and surface adhesion

• Automotive or catalysis industry experience

• Supervisory experience

• Product development background

• Ability to define Design of Experiments (DOEs) and perform statistical analyses

• Customer facing interaction and communication skills/experience

Soft Skills (Communication/Team/Leadership)

• Team player enjoying collaboration & getting work done by others / technicians.

• Strong communication and presentation skills

• Comfortable with both driving fundamentals but also a hands-on approach to problem solving. • Ability to instill a sense of urgency and drive team accordingly

• Innovative

• Highly self-motivated with the ability to work in an ambiguously defined and ever changing project space
