Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group):

 

• Scientist/engineer responsible for testing and modeling of new materials, components and/or process conditions for understanding and improving product attributes of porous ceramic honeycomb substrates and filters.

• Expectation of developing modeling and analytical tools or utilizing existing tools to gain fundamental understanding of underlying physics and mechanisms.

• Candidate must have a strong foundation in solid mechanics and a high level of expertise in numerical modeling with ability to design experiments, conduct hands on testing of ceramic materials and perform advanced data analysis for test data.

• This position will require the candidate to exhibit a combination of modeling, data analysis and laboratory based testing capabilities.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  

• Improve structural reliability of brittle material components in room temperature and high temperature environments.  

• Run structural mechanics simulations using finite element analysis (e.g. ANSYS, Abaqus)

• Perform data analysis tasks (experiment data analysis, statistical analysis, etc.), interpret results and communicate the overview and impact to project teams.

• Perform material property and product attribute characterization and measurements. 

• Validate models with production and field event observations

• Identify failure modes and potential critical challenges for new products and materials 

• Identify and conduct proper testing methods for material and product performance and reliability evaluations.  Develop new methods if needed to evaluate the risks.

• Collaborate with new product projects and commercial teams to help measure performance and attributes

• Make recommendations to projects to improve functional performance and reliability

• Develop new intellectual property

 

Travel Requirements (please note if international): Variable but expectation is <5%, possibly international

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40+ hours per week with flex-time

 

Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration)

 

PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geomechanics (Rock, Ice, etc.) or other field specializing in solid mechanics or structural mechanics.

 

 

Required Skills (These are skills that candidates MUST possess)

 

• Technical knowledge in area of material fracture or damage mechanics and strength of materials.

• Strong background of finite element analysis (FEA) modeling experience.

• Computer programming experience using Matlab. Experience with other languages is also desired.

• Hands-on lab experience with equipment and materials testing, particularly strength and fracture testing

• Familiarity with laboratory test methods used for materials property testing and ability to analyze associated data.

• Ability to perform Design of Experiments (DoEs) and conduct statistical analyses

• Familiarity with reliability engineering concepts

• Ability to work across organizational boundaries from research to manufacturing

• Strong communication skills and comfort in facilitation of technical personnel

 

Desired Skills (These are skills that would be nice for candidates to possess)

 

• Relevant industrial R&D experience or automotive after treatment experience

• Strength of porous and/or microcracked materials.

• Data analytics, machine learning and a strong ability to define tests and perform data analysis, including writing analysis scripts and interpreting results.

• Ability to learn image processing and associated image based measurements.

• X-ray tomography experience (measurement, analysis, etc.)

• Familiarity with fractography of brittle materials

• Predictive life modeling, FMEA, QFD &Fault Tree Analysis experience.

• Customer facing interaction and communication skills/experience

• Excellent communication and presentation skills, ranging from communicating with teams, management to sophisticated outside customers.

• Comfortable with a hands-on approach to problem solving.
