Scope of Position:

Corning Pharmaceutical Technologies (CPT) develops glass packaging solutions for the pharmaceutical industry. Ensuring the reliability of these solutions is a key requirement and value we provide to our customers. This position will help develop reliable products through understanding of glass fracture behavior of developing and commercialized products. The primary responsibility of this role is executing and documenting fractographic root cause analyses for development, manufacturing, customer line trials, and customer investigations. This person is also expected to participate on cross functional teams within CPT as a subject matter expert to build product understanding and lead fractography related experiments. Collaboration with other fractographers in other Corning organizations to leverage institutional knowledge is also expected.   A successful candidate will work with product development groups, research scientists, and engineers. Communication with a broad range of non-fractographers to disseminate learnings from analyses will also be needed.  


Day to Day Responsibilities: 

Perform fractographic root cause analyses

Document analyses in the form of written technical reports, presentations, and posters

Collaborate with other Corning fractographers

Engage in peer review process (review and be reviewed)

Provide onsite fractography support during line trials and / or visits to customer sites

Consult as fractography subject matter expert on other teams as necessary Lead and execute experiments  


Travel Requirements: 

Variable but expectation is <15%  


Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

40+ hours per week w/ flex time  


Education and Experience:

BS in materials science, glass science, or related area   1+ years of fractography experience  


Required Skills: 

Technical understanding of fracture of brittle materials

Practical fractographic analysis

Microscopy and imaging

Technical writing / presentation

Experimental design and execution  


Desired Skills:

Pharmaceutical industry experience

Familiarity with reliability and mechanical testing

Experience in manufacturing environment

Experience with analyses on strengthened glasses

Customer facing interaction and communication skills/experience  


Soft Skills: 

Team player who seeks and values collaboration

Excellent communication (both verbal and written) and presentation skills

Ability to work across organizational boundaries from research to manufacturing, customer engagement

Able to identify long term needs/goals as well as determine short term objectives to achieve
