We are seeking highly motivated and skilled scientist to join our innovative Inorganic Material Mechanics team in Product Reliability Technology directorate. This role offers an excellent opportunity for a highly skilled scientist with a strong background in mechanical, or materials engineering to advance the development of fundamental mechanical behavior models, reliability methodologies, and characterization techniques for glass, glass‑ceramics, ceramics and thin optical films.

Major Roles and Responsibilities:
- Work with other scientists and various project leaders to plan and carry out required experiments to advance progress against project objectives
- Preparation of testing specimens, routine operation of standardized testing, assisting with non-standard experimentation and methods development, maintaining and basic troubleshooting of equipment
- Develop and update SOP for the instruments operated and experiments performed.
- Assist in the organization and management of lab inventory, prioritize experiments.
- Gather the results and build communication packages for the project partners and leaders.
- Communicate with various labs and characterization tools across the campus to enable effective characterization of novel materials
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, materials engineering or a related field.
- Proficient in basics of mechanical and materials engineering specifically inorganic brittle materials.
- Self-starter – independent
- Hands-on technical aptitude
- Highly organized and good attention to detail, rigorous execution, and data accuracy
Day to Day Responsibilities:
- Sample prep for testing and assist with coordination of sample flow for DOEs, and fundamental understanding.
- Perform mechanical testing and characterizations.
- Attend project meeting and participate in the technical discussions along wth presenting data.
- Support other senior scientists and SMEs with generating requests for material processing and testing.
- Sample submission for testing, tracking and compilation of data.
- Generate/maintain documentation
Required Skills:
- Strong technical knowledge and analytical skills - Mechanical, material science, mathematics and physics
- Strong computer skills- Proficient with data compilation, analysis and documentation
- Familiar with basic mechanical testing equipment and instrumentation, such as UTM/Indentor/scratch tester along with test methods like 2PB,4PB, RoR etc.
- Demonstrate ability to interpret complex data sets and to evaluate/interpret their interactions to obtain meaningful results
- Hands-on experience with building test benches, and/or DAQ systems (optical/mechanical/electrical)
Desired Skills:
- Familiar with the applicability of characterization tools such as SEM, TEM, SIMS, microscope, optical profiler etc
- Familiar with instrumentation, DAQ systems, CAD software, Math and data analysis tools
- > 1yr experience in mechanical testing and characterization or hands on experience in building mechanical test equipment and operating it.
Soft Skills:
- Ability to multi-task – working on several deliverables at the same time
- Committed to technical collaboration and cross-functional coordination
- Quick to learn and open to acquiring new knowledge
- Excellent communication skill
- Highly motivated, detail-oriented, and organized.

The range for this position is $75,055.00 - $103,201.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
