Role Purpose:

  • Provide leadership, expertise, and practical support to achieve EHS excellence in all Advanced Optics (AO) manufacturing plants in NA, EMEA and APAC and to ensure AO has a rigorous process that protects the safety of our employees, contractors, and visitors.
  • Establish standards, governance processes, training framework and improvement strategy with roadmap for sustainable performance.
  • Ensure AO manufacturing practices are aligned with Corning’s EHS strategy, philosophy, policies and local legislations/regulations.
  • Develop technical solutions to improve manufacturing capability.

This role requires effective working collaboration within a heavily matrixed organizational structure at a plant, division (AO) and corporate (Corning Incorporated) level. The work is multi-dimensional in the areas of regional, legal, and corporate regulations and compliance. It involves influencing sustainable change in cultural and technical aspects of manufacturing at all levels of the organization to drive solutions in cooperation with plant operations, engineering, and technology resources.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Report to the AO Manufacturing Director on all aspects of EHS performance.
  • Act as direct division liaison for Global Safety Director and Global Environment and Sustainability Director.
  • Provide EHS leadership and support for all division manufacturing locations globally.
  • Represent AO the in a variety of critical Global Safety and Global Environment forums.
  • Develop, deploy, and maintain an EHS Strategy that drives and delivers improvements, is tied to overall business objectives and aligned to Safety, Environmental and Sustainability objectives.
  • Develop and deploy a standardized safety and environmental portfolio for corporate, division and plant programs across all AO manufacturing locations and monitor/communicate KPI progress to division and plant leadership.
  • Develop, manage and drive EHS governance to ensure EHS standards, global program initiatives and global metrics are implemented, maintained, improved, and sustained.
  • Pulse talent at locations through conducting performance reviews, developing succession plans as needed, and strengthen future EHS talent pipeline through selection and talent development of interns as necessary for the division and corporation.
  • Develop and deploy safety and environmental training that appropriately targets all levels of the organization – division leadership, manufacturing leadership, and all aspects of manufacturing, Operations/engineering and functional groups.


  • Minimum BS (MS preferred) – Safety and/or Environmental Engineering, or similar discipline.
  • 5-7 years demonstrated manufacturing experience of EHS leadership across multiple sites and direct/indirect management of EHS professionals.
  • Demonstrated manufacturing experiences in developing and deploying EHS strategy and associated tactical plans to deliver targeted results. Desired is experience with a systems and DMAIC approach.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills, able to synthesize large amounts of data into action plans that will achieve desired results.
  • Demonstrated effective influencing skills up/down/across organizations to generate positive change and achieve EHS objectives.
  • Demonstrated strong ownership of results via hands-on engagement with sites and flexing work activities to achieve results despite changing environments.
  • Demonstrated manufacturing experience on a global basis – international work experience in multiple plant environments and cultures is preferable.
  • Knowledge and experience in EHS regulatory and legal requirements and industry direction.
  • 25% travel domestic and international if located at Corning, NY, Fairport, NY, Canton, NY, Keene, NH or Phoenix, AZ. On rare occasion, travel can be in periods of 2 weeks or longer.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills across a global organization and with executive presentation skills.
