This position of Electro Optical Scientist I is in the Science and Technology (Research) Division of Corning Incorporated.  The candidate should be able to support emerging research projects on new Corning products and processes. Delivery of innovative solutions is through integration of multiple technology areas and collaboration with a wide range of scientists and engineers. Technical challenges can range in markets from optical communications to display technologies to life sciences and involve optical-electrical-mechanical applications such as: displays, photonics, free-space optics, waveguides, sensors, image processing, photovoltaics, energy storage, and optoelectronics.


We are looking for scientists and engineers with the ability to creatively solve problems and provide solutions to address some of the most pressing challenges to our businesses and define future research directions. The candidate for this position should have a track record of working in team environments, applying the fundamentals of their discipline, defining and executing experiments, and summarizing results to provide novel solutions involving the integration of optical, mechanical, and electrical components.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

Through an understanding of customer problem statements you will identify potential solutions as you collaborate with scientists and engineers, develop novel approaches to solve complex problems, and make quick critical experiments to demonstrate feasibility. 


Additional responsibilities include:   

  • Planning, designing, development, and testing of optoelectronic, optomechanical and/or electromechanical components, systems, and instruments as you seek to solve problems of diverse scope
  • Designing and executing experiments, providing data analysis, and providing guidance to teams
  • Generating concept packages for review with clients and technical teams
  • Interacting with project team members in collaborating field (materials, materials processing, optics, mechanics, electronics, software, metrology, modeling
  • Working in a lab environment to correlate critical experiments results with modeling results
  • Documenting results for internal and external publications
  • Purchasing equipment, tracking delivery, and receipt of material for projects


Required Skills:

Someone who is practical, capable and passionate about new technology, learning quickly with an inventive nature is a necessity.


  • M.S. in Engineering related degree of Physics with 0-3 years experience or BS with 6-10 years of industrial experience designing and/or testing optoelectronic, optomechanical, or electromechanical devices, systems, or products
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate hardware, electronics, and software
  • Capability of developing experiment plans (DOE), laboratory set-up, and executing experiments;
  • Experience with mechanical assembly of prototypes, experimental set-ups, and test equipment
  • Materials processing & device fabrication experience (e.g. solution coating, lamination, printing, patterning, cleanroom and semiconductor processing, etching,…)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel products;
  • Ability for occasional international and domestic travel based on business needs.  A reasonable estimate is 1-3 trips per year.


Desired Skills:

  • Data processing experience (e.g. Microsoft Excel, MATLAB, Python, etc)
  • Electrical and optical testing equipment experience
  • CAD experience (e.g. SolidWorks or AutoCAD);
  • Familiarity with controls software (e.g. LabView);
  • Automated assembly and/or measurement system design and implementation
  • Familiarity with waveguide and free-space optical design and CAD software (such as Zemax or CodeV);
  • Well-developed social and communication skills with an ability to work both independently and in high-performance interdisciplinary teams.
