Engineer, Metallurgy

Role Purpose

The Engineer, Metallurgy functions as a metallurgical specialist supporting projects across all stages of innovation for Corning’s businesses. This role provides technical solutions to complex materials-related process and product challenges through laboratory testing, production experiments, failure analysis, and cross-functional collaboration. The position works across laboratory and manufacturing environments to develop fundamental understanding, evaluate potential solutions, and support business needs through strong technical problem solving and metallurgical expertise. This role is designed for an early-career, high-potential engineer who is interested in building long-term metallurgical depth within Corning’s technical organization.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide technical solutions to a wide range of difficult materials-related process and product problems
• Work independently under general direction to determine and develop approaches to technical solutions
• Design and execute laboratory tests, simulations, and production experiments to build fundamental understanding, evaluate potential solutions, and resolve materials-related issues
• Collaborate with scientists, engineers, plant personnel, and laboratory staff to support project execution and technical problem solving
• Conduct failure analyses to determine root cause and develop, test, and recommend effective long-term solutions
• Develop and write metal specifications
• Identify, select, and qualify vendors
• Support projects across both laboratory and manufacturing environments
• Manage multiple projects and adapt to changing business and technical priorities
• Build technical understanding through formal training, project exposure, and collaboration across the broader metallurgical and materials engineering organization
• Support business needs through domestic travel and occasional international travel as required

Experiences/Education - Required

• Bachelor’s degree in a materials-related field, preferably Metallurgy
• 0 to 2 years of relevant metal or materials development, engineering, or processing experience
• Broad metallurgical knowledge, including understanding of metals and alloys, physical and chemical metallurgy, and material processing methods such as melting, hot and cold working, casting, and heat treating
• Knowledge of coating processes such as PVD, CVD, electroplating, electroless plating, and welding
• Strong engineering fundamentals, including strength of materials calculations, corrosion and electrochemistry, heat transfer and diffusion calculations, and failure analysis techniques
• Technical curiosity and rigorous problem-solving skills
• Ability to learn quickly and develop technical depth over time in a specialized metallurgical environment
• Ability to work effectively across both laboratory and manufacturing environments
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with coworkers across levels, functions, and global teams
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Adaptability and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
• Availability for domestic travel and occasional international travel as business needs require

Experiences/Education - Desired

• Master’s degree or PhD in a materials-related field
• Degree concentration or demonstrated interest in Metallurgy
• In-depth understanding of one or more of the following areas: refractory and precious metals, metallurgical thermodynamics, high-temperature corrosion and oxidation, metallic and ceramic coatings, applied electrochemistry, or metal forming
• Project management skill set
