Corning is seeking an Engineering Manager, Glass Melting System Design to join our Materials Conversion team at Sullivan Park in Corning, NY. This is an onsite, Monday–Friday position supporting early-stage technology development. Travel is typically less than 10%, with periods of higher travel during pilot work, manufacturing installation and startup at global locations.
This position supports the development of new melting systems and equipment for future Corning glass technologies. As a technically active people leader, you will lead and develop a small team of engineers and technicians while remaining closely involved in project delivery as a project manager and/or design contributor. You will help move complex work from concept through commissioning, build team capability, manage major investments, and align stakeholders through changing priorities.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of engineers and technicians supporting the melt system design portfolio.
- Personally lead or contribute to active melt-system development projects from concept through commissioning and startup.
- Own engineering design delivery across the group’s portfolio, including technical quality, execution, and progress against commitments.
- Manage department operating budgets and capital project budgets, including estimates for labor, equipment procurement, and installation.
- Partner with internal customers, program managers, and cross-functional stakeholders to align project scope, deliverables, resources, and timelines.
- Navigate a matrixed organization to negotiate priorities and resources while maintaining momentum through changing scope and urgent development needs.
- Contribute to melting-system strategy and portfolio roadmaps while establishing effective project reviews, skills development, and team communication rhythms.
Minimum Qualifications and Skills
- Associate's or bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline, with 10+ years of relevant experience.
- 5+ years of direct people-management experience, including coaching, training, and developing engineers and technicians.
- Experience managing capital project budgets at the tens-of-millions scale, including developing cost estimates for labor, equipment, and installation.
- Working knowledge of glass melting processes and material compatibility, or comparable experience with high-temperature materials/processes such as metals, ceramics, thermal or chemical conversion, semiconductor furnace systems, or combustion engineering.
- Experience leading teams in a matrixed organization, including negotiating priorities and resources across organizational boundaries.
- Demonstrated ability to lead early-stage development work through ambiguity, shifting scope, and rapid response requirements.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
- Master’s degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Direct experience with glass-melting platform design, project management, commissioning, or startup.
- Familiarity with multiple melting technologies and associated glass or material families.
- Familiarity with design or modeling tools, such as SolidWorks.

The range for this position is $148,334.00 - $203,959.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
