Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group): As Glass Development Scientist/Engineer, you will be a crucial member of a team developing new glass products and processes. You will become a subject expert in glass composition/property relationships, customer applications, and manufacturing processes. In doing so, you will help drive the successful technology transfer of our new glass products and processes into manufacturing and through commercialization. Businesses supported by the Glass Development Group include Gorilla Glass, Display Technologies, Automotive Glass Solutions, Pharmaceutical Glass Technologies, and Precision Glass Solutions among many others.  

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

(1) Supports new glass product and process development by collecting standard test data and crafting experiments to determine performance relative to customer and manufacturing requirements.

(2) Works with Research organization to develop deep understanding of the connections between glass physics and chemistry to customer and manufacturing performance.

(3) Works with Commercial Technology and Engineering organizations to develop hypotheses and design experiments to resolve customer and manufacturing issues if they arise.

 (4) Provides onsite support for new glass manufacturing trials.

 (5) Provides onsite support for new glass migrations; customer engagement, and manufacturing issue trouble-shooting on as-needed basis  

 

Travel Requirements (please note if international): Corning glass businesses have a global footprint including US, Europe, and Asia based manufacturing and customer locations. The typical travel for this position is 25 % during critical technology transfer and troubleshooting periods.  

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40 hours week / Mon – Fri Core Hours  

 

Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration)

PhD - Glass Science/Engineering, Ceramic Science/Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, Geology Bachelor's or Master's Diploma in Glass Science/Engineering, Ceramic Science/Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, or Geology plus a minimum of 5 years of relevant industrial experience  

 

Required Skills (These are skills that candidates MUST possess)

(1) Basic understanding of glass chemistry-property relationships

(2) Basic understanding of glass melting and forming processes

(3) Familiarity with standard glass characterization methods

(4) Systematic problem solving  

 

Desired Skills (These are skills that would be nice for candidates to possess)

Experience formulating glass compositions to achieve a set of target attributes

Deep Knowledge of glass raw materials and batch formulation

Experience crafting, operating, or trouble-shooting continuous glass melting/forming processes Experience crafting, operating, or trouble-shooting secondary glass processes such as reforming, polishing, coating, etc...  

 

Soft Skills (Communication/Team/Leadership)

(1) Strong communication skills - Oral and written with strong presentation skills

(2) Ability to work effectively in collaboration with multi-functional teams spanning research to commercial to manufacturing

(3) Ability to translate complex technical objectives into an executable action plan with minimal supervision/guidance.
