Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group): As Glass Development Scientist, you will be a crucial member of a team developing new glass products and processes. You will become a subject expert in glass composition/property relationships, customer applications, and manufacturing processes. In doing so, you will support global initiatives and help drive the successful delivery of new glass technologies (composition, melting, forming, finishing) from research through manufacturing and into commercialization. Businesses supported by the Glass Development Group include Gorilla Glass, Display Technologies, Automotive Glass Solutions, Pharmaceutical Glass Technologies, and Precision Glass Solutions among many others.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

 

• Support new glass product and process development by design and execution of experiment plans in support of overall technology delivery

• Engagement & integration with research, development, engineering and manufacturing across multiple organizations and global locations

• Develop deep understanding of the connections between glass physics and chemistry, customer requirements and manufacturing performance.

• Provide onsite support for new glass migrations; manufacturing trials, customer engagement, and manufacturing issue troubleshooting on as-needed basis

• Work with highly capable technician team and support organizations to complete high priority experiments.

 

Travel Requirements (please note if international):

 

Corning glass businesses have a global footprint including US, Europe, and Asia based manufacturing and customer locations.  The typical travel for this position is 25 % during critical technology transfer and troubleshooting periods.  Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40+, flex-time Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration).

 

• PhD - Glass Science/Engineering, Ceramic Science/Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, Geology Bachelor's or Master's Diploma in Glass Science/Engineering, Ceramic Science/Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, or Geology plus a minimum of 2-5 years of relevant industrial experience

 

Required Skills (These are skills that candidates MUST possess):

• Basic understanding of glass chemistry-property relationships and/or glass melting and forming processes

• Familiarity with standard glass characterization methods

• Demonstrated ability to do hands-on technical work; willing and able to lead modeling and experiment problem solving and troubleshooting by example.

• Practical experience in development of new materials, including glass and/or glass-ceramic families.

• Ability to identify the critical path on complex and convoluted initiatives

• Demonstrated experience in collaborative research Desired Skills (These are skills that would be nice for candidates to possess)

• Experience formulating glass compositions to achieve a set of target attributes

• Experience with data analytics tools or machine learning to drive material development or resolve complex problems

• Knowledge of glass raw materials and batch formulation

• Experience crafting, operating, or trouble-shooting continuous glass melting/forming processes Experience crafting, operating, or trouble-shooting secondary glass processes such as reforming, polishing, coating, etc.

• Experience interacting with international and/or interdisciplinary teams

• FMEA and manufacturing excellence expertise and experience Soft Skills (Communication/Team/Leadership)

• Strong, effective communication skills (oral and written)

• Interpersonal skills – open, engaging, able to establish and foster effective partnerships in a dynamic environment

• Ability to work effectively in collaboration with multi-functional teams spanning research to commercial to manufacturing

• Ability to translate complex technical objectives into an executable action plan with minimal supervision/guidance
