Process Research is seeking an experienced melting designer to lead the continuous improvement, and first-generation pilot projects on our early-stage experimental glass melting equipment. In this role, you will work with the engineering and operations groups to support the process rebuilds, as well as working in partnership with engineering, and business designers to generate solutions that support the pilot and scale up of revolutionary new technologies.



• Working in a highly matrixed environment, create and deliver objectives encompassing the generation of glass melting concepts and designs that would be transferable to manufacturing.

• Work with cross-functional teams to develop, deliver, and/or receive new technology, either mid-campaign or in preparation for process rebuilds. • Develop technology roadmaps to align with the existing roadmaps within the glass melting design community.

• Lead design team performing engineering level calculations for thermal, fluids, stress and simulation software, and work with modeling groups for more complex modeling needs which feed into the design process.

• Generate and review concepts using 3D CAD and lead detailed design reviews for peers, internal customers, and managers.

• Interface with external vendors on specifying and procuring various products, fixtures, and machine components to support projects

• Document results, unique learnings, and new equipment knowledge in R-Reports, Invention Disclosures, and/or technical presentations, as appropriate

• Maintain records and track expenditures against allocated funds. Estimate time required to accomplish tasks and monitor performance against schedules.

• Develop standard operating procedures to build R&D scale glass making equipment and work with team members to ensure quality build standards.

• Participate in problem-solving using root cause analysis tools such as KT, MEE

• Provide second level troubleshooting and work with the equipment maintenance organizations.

• Working with area leaders, develop and execute experimentation to define process windows and optimize product attributes meet specific product concept or application goals.

• Communicate progress to Steering Teams, Stakeholders and Project Teams as needed. Lead regular meetings with area leaders to communicate development schedules, discuss process status, assign priorities to experiments, equipment work, or other activities.

• Participate in directorate safety and 5S efforts, ensuring the safety of people and environment while delivering on the project goals.

• Provide technical input to project teams developing the next-generation platform.


Travel Requirements:

<10% travel Hours of work/work



Standard business hours; Monday – Friday. Work hours required to achieve objectives may exceed 40 hours per week during process rebuilds, process start-ups or to address equipment/facility related issues.


Required Education:

Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Master of Science in technical field (preference for Mechanical Engineering) Required Years and Area of Experience: 10+ years in a manufacturing/engineering environment, or 5+ years in a Corning manufacturing glass melting environment.

• Strong interest and skills in equipment engineering with broad knowledge of refractory materials, metal alloys, fabrication methods, assembly and joining methods, GD&T, tolerance stack ups/error budgets

• 3D CAD; SolidWorks proficiency is required

• Ability to apply decision making and problem-solving skills to review facts and weigh options using a systematic approach to solve problems.

• Ability to effectively leverage external machine builders and system integrators

• Excellent written and verbal communications skills

• Flexible to change and adjust smoothly as the situation demands

• Works in a safe manner and prioritizes a safe workplace

• Mechanical aptitude (hands-on), with experience adjusting/repairing equipment
