Scope of Position:
Assume responsibility as a glass finishing expert focusing on fundamental understanding of glass and glass ceramic finishing to enable:
(1) developing guidelines for finishing new glass and glass ceramic compositions,
(2) innovations in CNC glass finishing for complex shapes, and
(3) cost reduction/yield improvements in glass finishing.  
Work with a diverse matrix team on finishing optimization for new glass compositions, support transferring technology to finishers/contract manufacturers, and evaluating technologies for new product opportunities for a variety consumer electronics glass applications. 
The candidate will lead fundamental technology efforts on new glass/glass ceramic compositions to establish methods for optimizing finishing processes for cost and performance, and to help develop glass finishing processes that minimize finishing flaws. 

Day to Day Responsibilities:
• Assess finishing (grinding, lapping, polishing, CNC, other) properties of new glass and glass ceramic compositions
• Develop instrumental testing methods to assess glass finishing performance and working with glass scientists link it to fundamentals of glass structure

• Drive fundamental understanding of glass and glass ceramic finishing utilizing knowledge of material properties, material structure and finishing process parameter interactions to optimize processes and innovation
• Work closely with engineering and commercial teams to document the learnings and transfer to manufacturing
• Participate in cross-functional teams to drive development of new and unique complex shape finishing processes and development of product prototypes
• Provide technical consultation to help trouble shoot technical problems associated with glass finishing, as needed

Travel Requirements:
Ability to do approximately 5-10% international travel, typically 1-2 weeks at a time

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:
40 hrs/wk, 8-5, flex time available

Required Education:
MS/Ph.D. (Ph.D. preferred) in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Physical Chemistry or equivalent scientific discipline

Required Years and Area of Experience:
With MS, at least 2 years of working experience

Required Skills:
• Strong technical knowledge and hands-on experience in one or more of the technical areas of: brittle materials finishing/machining, tribology, material science/characterization, material performance
• Fundamental understanding of the mechanics of brittle materials
• Ability to plan and implement technical projects with minimum supervision
• Interact effectively with different groups within R, D & E organization and build collaborative relationships with them
• Strong problem solving, and proactive decision making to drive project

Desired Skills:
• Prior working experience in glass or ceramic finishing
• Strong communications skills, both verbal and written
• Experience in assessing and developing intellectual property

Soft Skills (Communication/Team/Leadership):
• Ability to work with diverse teams in matrixed organization
• Team player
