Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group):

Corning’s summer internship experience is rich with hands-on learning. You’ll live, work, and experience the communities in which Corning operates, while building on-the-job skills. As our intern, you will be involved with Research and Development within Corning’s Scientific & Technologies (S&T) segment.  


The position is for an internship focusing on thermal, optical and mechanical properties of glass and glass ceramics particularly in areas with the potential to enrich Corning's fundamental and applied knowledge of glass and glass ceramics. The intern is expected to work both as an individual carrying his/her own project, and as a team member to collect and summarize knowledge from key individuals within the development group and other Corning SMEs so that it can be used to develop new materials and processes.    


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Development and the execution of experiments related to key thermal, optical and mechanical performance of materials of interest and/or interactions between materials for process development.
  • Conducts internal and external literature reviews to summarize the available knowledge relevant to the topic, and interviews Corning SMEs to identify gaps and opportunities on the topic.


The purpose of our Intern Program is to raise the bar on talent by strengthening our pipeline for entry level roles for our immediate and future needs.


To be considered for an internship at Corning Incorporated, you must be actively enrolled at a college or university as a full-time student seeking a bachelor’s degree or higher. You must also have a current cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher (on a 0.00 to 4.00 scale).

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • Monday-Friday, standard 40hr week  
  • Duration: Summer 2021, 8-12 weeks  


Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration)

  • Enrolled as a graduate student (Masters or PhD) in the field of materials science and/or engineering, chemistry or physics.
  • Undergraduate students with relevant experience may also be considered.    


Required Skills

  • Knowledge of chemistry, thermodynamics and materials science
  • Problem solving and troubleshooting skills    


Desired Skills

  • Knowledge of glass and/or ceramic science
  • Experience in developing experimental methods
  • Knowledge of basic computer programs (e.g. Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Minitab, JMP)    


Soft Skills (Communication/Team/Leadership)

  • Good communication skills even when working remotely with team members
  • Works well as an individual and also as part of a team
  • Flexible and effective at working in constantly evolving situations
  • Ability to work with people from a variety of different technical backgrounds
