Scope of Position: The functional requirements on emissions components are getting increasingly more complex and focused on in-use emissions versus laboratory emissions certifications. Therefore characterizing and assessing the product performance in-use (vehicle, machine, etc) becomes essential to determine requirements for future product solutions and system optimizations. The role of the In-use testing manager is to lead a team to develop, improve, implement global in-use test capability and execute test programs (in house and with customers). Focus is on non-road and heavy duty applications (to a lesser extent light duty) for all relevant fuel types for internal combustion engines. Besides the deep evaluations of criteria pollutants (NOx, N2O, NH3, HC, CO and PN), GHG/CO2 assessment another area of concern as well as the proper implementation of Corning’s aftertreatment components in the vehicles to deliver reliable value to our customers. This role covers the requirements of all global emissions regulations and will work with Corning’s global engineering organizations. The in-use test manager will need to have strong ties to the industry, including regulators and consortia.



  • Follow and interpret global regulations specifically related to in-use testing
  • Participate in industry consortia and interest groups
  • Develop in-use testing capability globally – infrastructure, emissions equipment and analysis approaches
  • Initiate, develop and discuss testing programs with customers and industry partners
  • Develop in-use testing and analysis approaches for product and system evaluation
  • Understand testing objectives and provide input for the testing approach to the organization (Development, engineering, commercial)
  • Ensure data and test integrity and quality
  • Summarize and provide inputs on future product requirements to customers
  • Focus on details and make critical observations to set new directions in projects
  • Ability to supervise/execute in-use tests incl. troubleshooting of infrastructure and related equipment
  • Verify experimental observations based on first principles and physical models
  • Link performance related aspects to product characteristics/attributes and/or surrogate measures
  • Summarize results in reports and presentation and disseminate information within organization and to customers
  • Develop tools, processes and test sequences to accurately and repeatedly measure in-use emissions and aftertreatment system performance aspects
  • Develop and evaluate tools and strategies to easily implement our products in the application of our customers


Travel Requirements: Travel (mostly NA) up to 25-30%


Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: M-Fri 8-5pm and overtime as needed.


Required Education & Experience:

  • Master’s or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering
  • 5+ years of experience in after treatment design & testing desired


Required Skills:

  • Essential understanding of internal combustion engines, emissions and after treatment, including the test methods
  • Industry experience and contacts in the area of gas pollutant and PM/PN measurements
  • Ability to work on a system level
  • Hands-on experimental skills and experience with engine/emissions systems experimentation.
  • Rigor in experimental planning and execution as well as data analysis
  • Development and assessment of experimental procedures/plans
  • Ability to quickly understand complex testing systems (engines, dynos, emissions benches)
  • Familiarity with data analysis & management
  • Good computer skills including the use of advanced analysis tools (e.g. MATLAB) are data processing capability (w/ Excel/MATLAB) and documentation/reporting of results good computer skills (esp. MS office) and experience with data acquisition and vehicle/engine data interfaces (CAN)
  • Customer communication skills

  • Good understanding of chemical engineering fundamentals (fluid flow/hydrodynamics, heat transfer, kinetics, reactions)

  • Commercial driving license
