As our Intern, you will be involved with Corning’s Manufacturing, Technology and Engineering division (MTE) which is recognized as the leader in engineering excellence & Innovative manufacturing technologies by providing diverse skills to Corning’s existing & emerging businesses.


The purpose of our Intern / Co-op Program is to raise the bar on talent by strengthening our pipeline for entry level roles for our immediate and future needs.


To be considered for an Internship or Co-op at Corning Incorporated, you must be actively enrolled at a college or university as a full-time student seeking a bachelor’s degree or higher.




Purpose of Position:


This is a technical intern position where you, the engineer, will be expected to apply rigorous scientific method and mechanistic understanding to improve polymer processing and/or manufacturing capability for new and existing products.

The work requires you to be able to influence across organizational boundaries. You will collaborate with development and manufacturing process engineers to identify controlling mechanisms and apply the understanding to manufacturing system to optimize a process, modify data streams or suggest polymer process system modifications.


Day to Day Responsibilities:


  • Collaborate with research, development, and manufacturing teams to define experimental objectives and characterization plans that drive fundamental understanding to improve performance.
  • Utilize polymer structure/property relationships to identify, evaluate and implement potential product/material performance improvements.
  • Generate, compile, analyze and present results/recommendation on key project initiatives to project team and management.
  • Support Polymer lab processing and characterization capabilities by updating SOPs and developing new test plans.


Travel Requirements:


  • Some project specific travel is expected
  • Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:M-F; business hours
  • Some scheduling flexibility available
  • Duration: Summer 2023



Required Education:


  • Minimum of 2+ years working toward a Bachelor’s Degree in Material Science, Material Engineering, Polymer Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • GPA of 3.00 or higher (on a 0.00 to 4.00 scale


Required Years and Area of Experience:


  • No prior experience required. Previous industrial experience is a plus.


Required Skills:


  • Strong lab and experimental practices; can understand glass defect fundamentals and recognize deviations and implement routine solutions.
  • Strong lab and experimental practices; Have a working understanding of polymer processing (injection molding, extrusion) and polymer characterization methods (FTIR, TGA, DMA, DSC, rheology).
  • Ability to collaborate and integrate solutions
  • Strong data analysis and visualization skills
  • Results oriented and high level of dedication. Able to work in any stage of innovation and handle risk of failure.
  • Aim to learn new technologies and processes quickly.


Desired Skills:


  • Experience with Hot material process, such as melting and forming
  • Experience with injection molding and extrusion equipment
  • Knowledge of glass process modeling capability and how to use modeling tools spanning from early stage innovation to late stage manufacturing
  • Knowledge of polymer process modeling capability and how to use modeling tools spanning from early stage innovation to late stage manufacturing
  • Knowledge of Corning processes and business systems as well as being passionate about learning new technologies.
  • Experience with software, such as JMP, MatLab, MindJet, etc.
