The Knowledge Analyst / Research Writing Specialist will be responsible for providing the Corning’s Technical Community with support in the research writing domain as a component of the S&T KM team. This includes maintaining and delivering the S&T Research Writing training curriculum, as well as providing editor reviews and feedback on individual technical reports, presentations, and other publications. This role will help ensure there is a consistent level of quality when knowledge is captured in published formats. There will be regular engagement with highly technical stakeholders and feedback will be gathered to further improve the overall training program. In addition to the primary responsibilities, the role will also involve participating in, and sometime leading other KM initiatives where appropriate.


Scope of Position:

• Oversee the Research Writing Training Program, including scheduling and conducting trainings in the 8-course curriculum to participants in the North American, EMEA and Asia-Pacific regions

• Coordinate scheduling and participants for the Research Writing Workshop and provide support for the lead scientist leading the workshop as appropriate

• Conduct administrative tasks supporting the training program, including recording participants and managing the SharePoint site supporting the program

• Provide Research Writing Support, including 1:1 feedback and editing reviews on an as-needed basis for technical reports (research) and other publications, with the goal of strengthening authorship; provide editing feedback based on the American Chemistry Society (ACS) style guide

• Proofread Redlines articles as part of the review process

• Compile common mistakes and pitfalls identified from engagements to address in writing trainings

• Survey customers to identify new topics and areas of improvement for writing trainings

• Significant internal customer interaction with highly technical individuals (scientists, engineers, technicians, and project teams)

• Activities involve interaction with, and exposure to, information of significant importance to the organization and may be highly restricted

• Citizenship status must allow exposure to US export controlled technical data

• Actively participate in and sometimes lead new Knowledge Management programs, including activities to drive effective knowledge capture and improving the overall search and findability of key knowledge

• Collaborate with Knowledge Management peers and stakeholders to achieve overall organizational goals and objectives

• Act as a Knowledge Management Ambassador throughout the research, development, and engineering community, promoting the importance of capturing, sharing and protecting critical knowledge generated by the organization

• Identify and communicate “Best Practices” in knowledge capture and access methods


Required Skills / Experience:

• Research writing expertise

• Training and facilitation skills (both 1:1 and group sessions)

• Ability to prepare effective teaching materials for classes

• Customer facing experience; proven track record of facilitating and actively engaging with internal customers

• Proficient in use of MS Office tools

• Influencing skills; ability to work with all levels of the organization; ability to relate to and build relationships with the scientific community

• Excellent organizational skills

• Problem solving


Desired Skills:

• Experience working in an R&D facility

• Strong working knowledge of SharePoint or similar content management platforms

• Strong understanding of knowledge management best practices and supporting capabilities

• Familiarity with search tools, especially scientific literature and patent searches

• Understanding of meta-data, taxonomy and information storage, retrieval & search methods

• Able to successfully communicate benefit of adoption of best practices to users

• Demonstrates passion for success of the scientific community in leveraging these tools to accelerate the innovation process

Required Education: Bachelor’s Degree, preferably with strong research writing focus
