Scope of Position:

The candidate will formulate ontology-based semantic models for representing experimental processes, promote best practices for capturing FAIR data, and collaborate with data and material scientists in leveraging contextualized data for materials innovation. Partner with multidisciplinary teams of computer, material and modeling scientists in developing platforms and frameworks for materials informatics. Be a catalyst for next generation materials innovation through materials informatics at Corning’s world-renown materials R&D laboratory. We are looking for a self-starter information architect who can keep the big picture in mind while partnering with subject matter experts in developing and delivering semantic models for materials innovation.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Develop harmonized ontological models for research experimental processes
  • Champion data governance and management guidelines to promote FAIR data for informatics
  • Partner with other internal groups to deliver holistic data management strategies
  • Partner with data generation SMEs to address issues in data capture, integrity and reuse
  • Monitor and leverage external data models and standards where appropriate
  • Participate in agile team development

 

Required Skills:

  • Model and ontology development • FAIR data principles
  • Proficient in metadata engineering and semantic web technologies (e.g., RDF, RDFS, OWL, SHACL, SKOS)
  • Self-starter with strong analytical skills
  • Effective communicator
  • Experience with research and industrial processes
  • Ability to partner with research laboratories and scientists, gathering requirements and iteratively developing models
  • Solid understanding of software engineering fundamentals
  • Quickly learn and evaluate new technologies

 

Education:

  • Graduate or postgraduate degree in computer science, data science or knowledge engineering

 

Desired Skills:

  • Experience in any of the following is considered an asset:
  • Data-driven architectures
  • Machine learning (time series data, NLP)
  • Industrial instrumentation (e.g,. OSIsoft PI platform)
  • Digital manufacturing
  • Electronic lab notebook (ELN) and laboratory information system
  • Materials science, chemistry or other hard sciences; the scientific method
  • Data science
  • Python proficiency, with experience in at least one other widely used programming language (e.g., C#, Golang, Rust)
  • Experience with triplestore databases and libraries such as RDFLib

Travel requirements: Limited travel, likely <10%

 

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

Normal Business Hours 8:00-5:00 with additional hours occasionally needed for urgent project demands.
