Purpose of the role:

Corning technology development organization is looking for a glass lamination process engineer to pro-actively develop glass lamination techniques to enable Corning to expand into innovative product spaces and new markets. Technology development initiatives will vary in scope, including:

• Development of new lamination processes

• Evaluation of new polymeric interlayers for various laminated glass designs and products

• Application for various products into various market spaces (including architecture, automotive, consumer electronics……)

• Manual sample making at R&D level

• Trials on pilot or manufacturing lines

• Transfer of new lamination processes to manufacturing

 

Responsibilities:

Project delivery will include:

o Development of solutions for project specific glass lamination challenges.

o Evaluating interlayers and adhesives for glass lamination from various vendors and suppliers in order to meet product and process requirements. Engage in equipment testing if required.

o Protecting Corning intellectual property: Document know-how and invention carefully and systematically; Follow project guidelines when engaging externally.

o Designing experiments, analyzing data, and documenting outcomes

o Making samples for internal project needs and customer engagement

o Managing to Milestones

o Develop an understanding of glass, interlayers, coatings, mechanical behavior, and bonding of glass materials, leveraging subject matter experts from different disciplines.

• Discuss objectives and priorities with supervisor and project workstream leader(s)

• Participate in effort to stay up to date on the latest glass lamination technologies, to document and share lamination knowledge within Corning

• Collaborate with resources from various disciplines (research, engineering, manufacturing, characterization, analysis, modeling) to deliver

• Actively comply with safety procedures and be an advocate for an interdependent safety culture

• Foster a positive and collaborative team culture

 

Required Education and Experience:

• B.S. in chemical or mechanical engineering or equivalent

• At least 3 years of experience in several technical areas overlapping position need:

• Glass lamination including stack-up, vacuum bagging, flat-bed lamination, and parts handling

• R&D lamination equipment specifications, procurement, acceptance testing and start-up

• At least 2 years of experience in a pilot or manufacturing environment involving glass lamination.

• Glass laminate interlayer knowledge or expertise

• Glass processing operations

• Thin glass handling and movement

• Ability to work effectively on multiple projects simultaneously

• Interest and/or experience in technology and process development

 

Other:

• Travel Requirements: About 20% domestic travel in average depending on project assignment, mostly domestic. Could be heavier at time and international if required by the program.
