  • As a Laser Processing Project Manager on our team, your role will encompass both project and functional management. As a functional manager, you would directly supervise up to several engineers and scientists within the department. The project management aspect of the role encompasses both early stage external customer development and Corning internal application development.
  • Laser Processing & Engineering Project Manager is a department core staff member. Works closely together with other staff members to organize, support and execute the laser processing portfolio, review and monitor Early Opportunity Investigations (EOI) requests, support strategic projects, and help manage department budget and capital.
  • The role includes oversight of Corning Laser Technologies (CLT) capability development projects, and particularly CLT/Advanced Optics (AO) sponsored MTE-Advanced Engineering projects, as well as CLT/AO sponsored and business-aligned research projects, and business-aligned laser processing research projects.
  • You should possess deep knowledge in lasers, physics and optics, as well as understanding of the technical and engineering implications of selection of process parameters such as laser wavelength, pulse duration and energy.
  • The responsibilities further entail demonstrating this understanding to support development and deployment of technology to create new or improve existing manufacturing processes or products.



  • Preserve and Advance laser processing core capability in service of Corning’s Manufacturing Technology and Engineering (MT&E) and Science and Technology (S&T) communities.
  • Support development of laser processes and engineering associated hardware to process new materials, new part geometries, or improvement in precision, quality, throughput, or yield.
  • Project management roles primarily for optics and laser processing related projects that require laser processing and engineering, technology delivery for new laser processing systems and provide innovative solutions.
  • Collaboration with CLT Development and Engineering teams in Krailling, German.
  • Collaboration with CLT/AO commercial technology leads.
  • Laser processing and engineering support through all stages of innovation (research through manufacturing).
  • Be an active member of the laser processing and engineering team, work cooperatively with other scientists and engineers on the team to support creation of process and hardware solutions.
  • Support manufacturing through laser processing and engineering, delivery of processes and applications with results to improve both current and new processes in order to fully meet customer requirements.
  • Support startup of new designs and processes.
  • Anticipate, identify and develop improved optics, measurements and controls for new laser processes and process development.
  • Work interactively with people across all organizations (RD&E and Manufacturing). Interface with both Corning internal application project teams and external customer teams. Participate on cross-organizational project teams to solve system-level challenges for new or existing products.

  • We require PhD in Optical Physics, Optical Engineering, Physics, or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent), with emphasis on optics, lasers and laser/matter interactions.
  • We would also consider highly qualified, experienced individuals with a Master’s degree in Physics, Optical Engineering, Optical Physics, or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
  • We require 10+ years of optics, physics, or laser processing and engineering development experience.



  • Demonstrated project and portfolio leadership and management experience.
  • Knowledge of Corning S&T organization and technology functions and demonstrated experience leveraging these functions on internal development projects/programs
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with laser/matter interactions
  • Experience with opto-mechanical systems, laser beam delivery, and related design and engineering principles.
  • Demonstrated experience in hardware platform definition and development (includes lasers, optics, mechanics, software, algorithms, data analysis, etc.)
  • Ability to work with team members across variety of technology fields (e.g. physics, chemistry, material science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering) to solve system-level problems as part of developing new processes or new hardware.
  • Experimental planning and rigorous implementation of designed experiments.



  • Experience leading multi-function, multi-location, and international technology teams.
  • Experience interacting with German and Asian colleagues, customers and/or partners.
  • Experience in laser processing of glass and ceramics.
  • Laser processing & engineering experience specific to glass processing and laser processing systems integration. Preference would be given to those individuals with experience working on Corning Laser Technologies systems.
  • Understanding of glass technology, glass compositions/types, methods of glass forming and manufacture, and laser cutting of glass. Knowledge of statistical analysis tools, design of experiments (DOEs), statistical process control (SPC), and other process control/analysis techniques, measurements and measurement equipment expertise, would all be a plus.
  • Ability to analyze process data, identify and quantify trends, and use this information to guide improved laser process solutions.
