Scope of Position:

  • This is a leadership position that includes managing a small (3-5) group of engineers, leading deep learning for imaging at Corning, and computer vision-based project work. Project work is expected to be approximately 75% of the time commitment, with leadership responsibilities filling the remaining 25%. The role requires strong technical skills in computer vision and deep learning, and a desire to mentor engineers on their technical projects and career growth. This role is part of a corporate engineering group that provides measurement system solutions to all of Corning’s divisions.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • People Management:
    • Provide technical support/guidance to direct reports, including project management advice and support relationships with internal customers
    • Provide timely input and reports on workload planning, project prioritization, and project updates.
    • Provide feedback, coaching tools to assist employees with career planning and performance evaluations.
    • Assure a safe workplace for employees (e.g. safety checklists, safety training, etc.)
    • Support recruiting, hiring and integration of talent into the organization.
    • Manage project workload and project pipeline for direct reports
    • Coach direct reports on best practices related to design & development of metrology for manufacturing
  • Technical Leadership:
    • Establish best practices pertaining to the use of deep learning for machine vision in use at Corning.
    • Obtain widespread “buy-in” and use of best practices across Corning.
    • Prepare and deliver teaching aides on best practices
  • Project Work:
    • Leverage off-the-shelf instruments or develop new measurement methods to optimize manufacturing processes or inspect the quality of Corning products.
    • Demonstrate proof-of-concepts in a lab environment.
    • Engineer measurement solutions that are suitable for use in manufacturing.
    • Work with a variety of cross functional groups (Development, Quality, IT, Purchasing, Operations) to deliver effective solutions.
    • Leverage external suppliers for key technologies or core competencies such as system integration.
    • Define Scopes of Work, competitively quote when appropriate, issue Purchase Orders, track supplier work and approve invoices.
    • Design experiments and analyze data to identify and implement improvements to measurement systems or production processes.
    • Create/update documentation for release to production including Machine Specifications; operating procedures and drawing packages.
    • Train engineering, maintenance and operations people how to use and maintain measurement systems.
    • Provide remote and onsite troubleshooting using data and performance analysis of the installed systems.
    • Develop and apply measurement system analysis techniques to ensure proper measurement system application.

 

Travel Requirements:

  • 10-30% travel domestic and international

 

Required Education, Years and Area of Experience:

  • BS, MS or PhD in Physics, Optics, ME, EE, or Computer Engineering
  • 10+ years engineering experience in measurements engineering related field

 

Required Leadership Skills:

  • Effective leadership & communication (written & verbal) skills
  • People management skills (people development, performance evaluation, staffing, etc,).
  • Able to manage, prioritize, and deliver on a portfolio of projects and group initiatives.
  • Ability to make sound technical decisions within and outside area of expertise.
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of an organization.
  • Ability to work in technical project teams in leadership and team member roles.

 

Required Technical Skills:

  • Knowledge of computer vision algorithms (blob analysis, edge finding, morphology, feature extraction, classification, metrology).
  • Experience with Python CV/ML packages; OpenCV, Sklearn, Numpy, and at least one deep learning package (Tensorflow/PyTorch/Keras/Mxnet, etc).
  • Knowledge of Machine Vision systems (optics, lighting, cameras, image acquisition, image analysis)
  • Familiarity with Python CV/ML environment and Microsoft Visual Studio environment (C#).
  • Comfortable reading research papers and exploring new technologies in this field.
  • Working knowledge of Matlab, Minitab, or other mathematical/statistical analysis tools.
  • Knowledge of calibration methods for physical / dimensional / optical measurement equipment.
  • Working knowledge with high performance computing systems.
  • Ability to efficiently summarize key accomplishments in period reports.
