Scope of Position
In this role you will apply Materials Science Engineering fundamental principles to solve technical challenges primarily related to Ceramic, Metal and Polymer materials used in Corning manufacturing processes and products. This corporate engineering role serves all existing businesses, with typical project assignments lasting 6 months to 2 years and ranging from initial research projects through stage 5 manufacturing support. Our organization serves a flexible base of resources and knowledge which facilitates rapid solution development and emphasizes strong technical competence. You will serve as a material expert with interactions including raw materials, suppliers, fabrication, research, development, and manufacturing.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
• Serve as expert in material properties and their linkage to impact on Corning's manufacturing processes and products.
• Work alongside senior level engineers for execution of project objectives.
• Drive to root cause understanding of technical challenges to improve yield, extend asset life, reduce costs, improve product attributes, and enable new products.
• Execute standard laboratory testing regimens, run analytical equipment, and work alongside senior level engineers in development of physical process simulations to extend knowledge base and support/disprove hypotheses.
• Work collaboratively with laboratory staff to ensure optimal turnaround time for testing and experimentation to meet critical project milestones.
• Work with external suppliers to identify best material solutions for project application.
• Share experimental findings with colleagues ranging from technical peers to engineering leadership providing information which enables data-based decisions driving project success.
• Maintain high quality engineering principles, including extensive use of statistics, structured problem-solving methods such as KT, DOE, and DMAIC six sigma tools.
• Document all project findings in internal, structured reports and presentations.
• Protect Corning's intellectual property by filing invention disclosures for patent applications.
Experiences/Education - Required
- BS in Ceramic, Metallurgical, Polymer Engineering or Materials Science (MS or PhD will also be considered for this position) plus 0-5 years of experience.
- Relevant coursework related to ceramic or metal materials for glass manufacturing or polymer materials for extruded and/or injection molded products.
- Laboratory experience, hands on approach to developing and executing experimentation to drive to root cause understanding.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build successful working relationships with internal business customers, external suppliers and co-workers.
Experiences/Education - Desired
- Working knowledge in the approach to failure mechanism understanding with practical application for process/design improvement.
- Material understanding and linkage to properties; microstructure, chemistry, high temperature material interactions, sintering, forming techniques.
- Process engineering knowledge and project management tools and approach.
- Statistical data analysis, utilization of designed of experiments

The range for this position is $65,294.00 - $89,780.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
