Corning is hiring a Materials Engineer in Corning, NY at the Decker Engineering Building in an onsite role supporting materials and high-temperature laboratory work. Relocation assistance provided. This position includes up to 25% travel, primarily domestic with some international travel depending on project needs.

For engineers who want more variety, more hands-on problem solving, and broader exposure than a typical single-site role can offer, this position provides the chance to work across materials, manufacturing, and product applications that support multiple Corning businesses. The team helps solve practical problems tied to how glass, ceramics, and other materials perform in equipment and manufacturing environments. This is a strong fit for someone with a background in ceramic engineering, materials science, or a closely related engineering field who enjoys lab work, technical troubleshooting, and applied engineering. Candidates with directly aligned ceramic or materials degrees may come from strong academic, research, internship, or early-career backgrounds, while candidates from adjacent engineering disciplines should bring relevant industrial materials experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Apply ceramic and materials engineering fundamentals to solve technical challenges related to glass, ceramics, and other materials used in manufacturing processes
  • Support projects focused on improving yield, extending asset life, reducing cost, improving product performance, and enabling new products
  • Develop and carry out laboratory test plans and process simulations to better understand material behavior and support root cause investigation
  • Work closely with laboratory staff, technicians, suppliers, and engineering teams to evaluate materials and support project execution
  • Partner with design and manufacturing teams to recommend materials based on operating conditions, application requirements, and performance needs
  • Share technical findings through reports and presentations to technical peers, project teams, and leadership
  • Document project results using structured engineering methods and sound technical analysis
  • Support multiple projects at once across a range of materials and business applications

Minimum Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Ceramic Engineering or Materials Science Engineering, or a related engineering discipline with relevant industrial materials experience
  • 0–3 years of experience in a ceramic, materials, or related engineering role
  • Technical knowledge of material processing, evaluation, and failure mechanisms, especially in ceramic, glass, or other manufacturing-related applications
  • Hands-on laboratory or applied engineering experience developing and carrying out experiments to investigate material behavior and root cause
  • Ability to manage multiple technical priorities across different project areas
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document findings and present technical information to different audiences

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

  • Background in ceramic materials, glass materials, refractory materials, or high-temperature materials applications
  • Experience supporting manufacturing, process engineering, material qualification, or supplier-related work
  • Familiarity with microstructure, chemistry, ceramic forming techniques, dry or wet processing, or sintering
  • Experience with statistical analysis, design of experiments, or structured problem-solving methods
  • Ability to work effectively with technicians, suppliers, and cross-functional engineering teams
  • Interest in developing broad technical capability within a corporate materials engineering organization

This position does not support immigration sponsorship.

The range for this position is $67,150.00 - $92,331.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
