Role Purpose

Join our Materials Processes team as a graduate-level intern, working directly under the mentorship of a Principal Scientist. This internship offers hands-on experience in industrial research, experimental design, and data analysis within the fields of glass, polymers, and advanced materials. You’ll contribute to real-world projects, collaborate with experts, and develop skills essential for a career in materials science.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning and executing experiments related to materials processing, characterization, and product/process development, specifically in the areas of Ion Exchange (IOX) and chemical etching of glasses.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret experimental data with guidance from the Principal Scientist and project team.
  • Participate in team meetings, technical discussions, and collaborative problem-solving sessions.
  • Prepare and present findings in written reports and oral presentations.
  • Support the development of new product concepts, process improvements, and technical demonstrations.
  • Conduct literature reviews and benchmarking activities to inform project direction.
  • Maintain laboratory safety standards and follow established protocols for handling materials and equipment.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, manufacturing, and commercial technology.

Experiences/Education - Required

  • Currently pursuing an M.S. or Ph.D. in Materials Science, Physics, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with laboratory research, experimental design, and data analysis (academic or industrial).
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Commitment to safety and ethical research practices.
  • Must be available for 10 weeks during Summer 2026 (May 27-July 31, 2026) with a graduation date of December 2026 or later
  • Be interested in working for Corning, Inc after graduation, if presented with a full-time job opportunity.
  • Be willing to work in Corning, NY.

​The range for this position is $1,635.00 - $3,185.00 biweekly.  Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
