Scope of Position:

  • This is a leadership position that involves a combination of people supervision and project work. The balance of project work versus supervision will depend on the number of direct reports (3 to 7). The role requires strong technical skills and a desire to mentor engineers on their technical projects and career growth. This role is part of a corporate engineering group that provides measurement system solutions to all of Corning’s divisions.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • People Management:
    • Hold monthly 1:1s with all direct reports
    • Provide technical support/guidance to direct reports, including project management advice and support relationships with internal customers
    • Provide timely input and reports on workload planning, project prioritization, and project updates.
    • Provide feedback, coaching tools to assist employees with career planning and performance evaluations.
    • Assure a safe workplace for employees (e.g. safety checklists, safety training, etc.)
    • Support recruiting, hiring and integration of talent into the organization.
    • Manage project workload and project pipeline for direct reports
    • Coach direct reports on best practices related to design & development of metrology for manufacturing
  • Technical Leader:
    • Leverage off-the-shelf instruments or develop new measurement methods to optimize manufacturing processes or inspect the quality of Corning products.
    • Demonstrate proof-of-concepts in a lab environment.
    • Engineer measurement solutions that are suitable for use in manufacturing.
    • Work with a variety of cross functional groups (Development, Quality, IT, Purchasing, Operations) to deliver effective solutions.
    • Leverage external suppliers for key technologies or core competencies such as system integration.
    • Define Scopes of Work, competitively quote when appropriate, issue Purchase Orders, track supplier work and approve invoices.
    • Design experiments and analyze data to identify and implement improvements to measurement systems or production processes.
    • Create/update documentation for release to production including Machine Specifications; operating procedures and drawing packages.
    • Train engineering, maintenance and operations people how to use and maintain measurement systems.
    • Provide remote and onsite troubleshooting using data and performance analysis of the installed systems.
    • Develop and apply measurement system analysis techniques to ensure proper measurement system application.


Travel Requirements:

  • 10-30% travel domestic and international


Required Education:

  • BS, MS or PhD in Physics, Optics, ME, EE, or Computer Engineering


Required Years and Area of Experience:

  • 5+ years engineering experience in measurements engineering related field


Required Skills:

  • Measurement system development or characterization
  • Machine Vision system design & development
  • Knowledge of image processing algorithms (blob analysis, edge finding, morphology, feature extraction, classification, metrology)
  • Strong programming in C# (or .NET)
  • Experience with electrical/optical/mechanical installations, including system checkout and troubleshooting
  • Experience with Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility (GR&R), Measurement System Analysis (MSA), and Measurement Uncertainty Analysis.
  • Working knowledge of Matlab, Minitab, or other mathematical/statistical analysis tools.
  • Knowledge of calibration methods for physical / dimensional / optical measurement equipment.
  • Ability to efficiently summarize key accomplishments in period reports.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with internal customers to understand metrology requirements and deliver results that are effectively interpreted and applied.
  • People management skills (people development, performance evaluation, staffing, etc,).
  • Able to manage, prioritize, and deliver on a portfolio of projects and group initiatives.
  • Ability to make sound technical decisions within and outside area of expertise.
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of an organization.
  • Ability to work in technical project teams in leadership and team member roles.
  • Working knowledge with high performance computing systems.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.


Desired Skills:

  • Experience coaching and mentoring measurement engineers.
  • Experience working with multiple Corning divisions.
  • Experience with IR cameras and pyrometry
  • Strong internal Corning network.
