Scope of Position:

  • The focus of this position is on the design and development of robust, first/next generation process machine systems and products that provide significant competitive advantage to Corning’s businesses, and / or enable new products and product lines.  This position will support some or all of Corning Incorporated’s divisions. 
  • The individual will have the opportunity to be a member of cross-functional project sub-teams, typically on early innovation stage projects.  This normally includes concept generation, technology development, detail design / build, and start-up in manufacturing.


Role within group:

  • Individual will participate on cross-functional project sub-teams, typically on innovation stage projects, through concept generation, technology development, detail design / build, and start-up in manufacturing.
  • Generate concepts using 3D CAD, and participate in the detailed design of machines, products, systems etc.  
  • Perform engineering level simulations, potentially including stress, vibration and thermal problems using simulation modules (finite element, computational fluid dynamics etc.), as input to the design process.  
  • Apply GD&T as appropriate in the design of components to ensure adequate precision to the final design.  Perform tolerance stack-ups and error budgets as appropriate for the application.
  • Participate in brainstorming sessions and design reviews relevant to the project needs.
  • Enable strong level of technical curiosity that will enable unique solutions to the technical challenges.
  • Enable a high level of fundamental understanding of the process and materials to enable the design and development of cost effective products and machine systems.
  • Effectively leverage external machine builders and system integrators for detail design, build, and integration of later stages of machine system implementation.
  • Participate in estimating costs, defining project scope, budget and schedule.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Perform conceptual and detailed design of machines, products and systems using 3D CAD and simulation modules.
  • Interface and work with the Research, Development and Manufacturing teams that are involved with the design and manufacture of new products and machine systems for any of Corning’s Divisions including Science and Technology (R&D).
  • Work with other project team members on solving difficult mechanical engineering related problems, understanding project related issues, and general process engineering and process understanding.
  • Utilize internal lab facilities and equipment to develop proof of concept prototypes.
  • Interface with outside suppliers on specifying and procuring various precision products, fixture and machine components to support the projects they are involved in.
  • Interface with internal R&D and manufacturing customers and internal trades personnel to get machine systems set-up and functional. 
  • Individual must document project results through internal reporting means.
  • Individual must present the project(s) they are involved with for review by peers, customers and managers.
  • Work as a team member during the development of new process equipment systems with system integrators and/or external sub-contractors.
  • Report on project activities on a pre-determined basis. Ensure results meet the customer’s requirements and standards.


Travel Requirements:

  • Normal routine travel at about 10%.   Depending upon specific project assignment, more travel could be required including during the installation, debug, and start-up of equipment, as well as for interaction with internal and external Customers and Suppliers.


Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • Normal Business Hours (8 – 5, M – F), however, work hours required to achieve project objectives most likely will exceed 40 hours per week.


Required Skills:

  • Strong understanding of mechanical design, with knowledge of materials, fabrication methods (machining, forming, molding etc.) assembly and joining methods, GD&T, tolerance stack ups/error budgets.
  • Excellent understanding of engineering fundamentals, and the ability to deploy those fundamentals into successful designs.
  • Experience with 3D CAD modeling (Solid Works preferred).
  • Ability to effectively manage highly ambiguous situations.
  • Ability to apply decision making and problem solving skills to review facts and weigh options using a systematic approach to solve problems.

Education and Experience:

  • B.S. in Technical Discipline or equivalent experience, M.S. preferred.
  • 0-2 years minimum experience in a technical field, potentially including relevant internships in technology or manufacturing organizations/companies.
