Scope of Position

  • The Materials, Melting, and Mineralogy group provides expertise to Corning’s various business units, with emphasis in raw materials, glass technology, glass melting, and glass defects. Melting technology and process understanding contribute to multiple Corning market access platforms, which requires practical skills in process engineering, material science, glass melting fundamentals, and defect formation. This position includes responsibilities in both supervising the Melting Technology team and technical project work leading and/or supporting melting troubleshooting efforts in Corning’s glass melting facilities worldwide.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Supervision (~15%):
    • Manage workload, including anticipating future assignments for team members, that meet business needs and support team member’s individual career growth. This is focused on existing internal customers.
    • Ensure performance to customer’s expectations/project deliverables and continued growth of performance for your direct reports:
      • Ensure project assignments are being met, and if not, that the individual has a path to resolve issues.
      • Identify development needs for team members. Create training plans with direct reports and ensure their completion.
      • Ensure MBOs (Manage By Objectives) are created and tracked through the year with quarterly scoring.
      • Conduct annual performance reviews.
    • Collaboration with other group leaders to coordinate assignments as needed. For example, with thermal analysis, defects characterization, math modeling, and design experts, where applicable.
    • Ensure all individuals are working safely and meet safety training needs.
    • Meet regularly with every direct report.
    • Ensure good work is recognized.
  • Project work (85%)    
    • Maintain project work either as a technical expert or team leader, with includes:
      • Application of science and engineering principles, primarily in glass melting, to ensure fundamental understanding and definition of defect formation mechanisms and solution paths.
  • Appropriate IP capture.
    • Project leadership opportunities may include melting support for manufacturing, solving ongoing defects issues in manufacturing, and developing deep understanding of fundamental mechanisms. Possibility to provide both leadership and consulting roles related to glass melting, glass forming, raw materials, and ceramics across all divisions as well as the larger internal technology community (R, D, and MTE). Project leadership and engineering excellence tools will be leveraged and supported for optimal outcome.


Travel Requirements:

  • Travel is required to Corning’s worldwide operations. Frequency and duration will vary according to project stage and status, but typically ranges between 30-40%. Travel may include project meetings, process development, on site experimentation, new technology trials, or vendor visits.


Required Education:

  • MS, or PhD in Mechanical, Material Science, Glass Science, or Chemical Engineering


Required Years and Area of Experience:

  • 10 years experience in glass melting, materials or process engineering or related fields; high degree of technical competence


Required Skills:

  • Ability to assimilate quickly and produce valuable results.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with customers, suppliers, and co-workers.

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of glass melting processes
  • Knowledge of process engineering tools such as situational assessment, KT, design of experiments etcetera.
  • Thermal analyses: analytic solutions, familiarity with computational methods
