Scope of Position

  • Manage team chartered with applying materials science engineering fundamental principles to ensure a consistent supply of high quality raw materials to plants and projects.  This will be achieved through rigorous qualifications of new materials, managing raw materials suppliers, using/developing control systems and continuous property improvement.  In addition, this candidate will oversee glass technologists, who employ thorough understanding of raw materials to final product transformation, including chemistry, the process itself and final quality.  This corporate engineering role serves all existing businesses.  Team members typically support projects ranging from research through stage 5 manufacturing.  The organization serves a flexible base of resources and knowledge which facilitates rapid solution development and emphasizes strong technical competence.  A team of materials experts, they deal with interactions of raw materials on products and processes.
  • Project leadership opportunities may include raw material and glass technology focused as well as technical leadership beyond these areas.  Possibility to provide both leadership and consulting roles related to glass melting, glass forming, raw materials, and ceramics across all divisions as well as the technology community (R, D, and MTE).  Project leadership and engineering excellent tools will be leveraged and supported for optimal outcome.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities include managing team to:

  • Understand material properties and their impact on Corning’s products and processes
  • Identify and qualify raw materials to improve yield, reduce costs, improve product attributes and enable new products
  • Manage raw material suppliers
  • Develop process simulations to extend knowledge base and prove/disprove hypotheses  
  • Work with department laboratory staff to ensure optimal turnaround and experimental efficiency  
  • Protect Corning’s intellectual property 
  • Document all results  
  • Maintain high quality engineering principles, including extensive use of statistics, structured problem solving methods such as KT, DoE, and DMAIC, DMAIC six sigma tools  
  • measure and communicate performance against objectives
  • The ideal candidate will serve both as a project/technical leader and/or contributor and a functional manager.

 

Travel Requirements

  • up to 25%, some international

 

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • Flex time; typical 8:00 – 5:00; Monday – Friday. Some projects may require additional hours.

 

Required Skills

  • 10 years experience in materials or process engineering or related fields; high degree of technical competence
  • Ability to assimilate quickly and produce valuable results.

Education and Experience

  • Technical Degree Required (glass, ceramics, materials science or related fields), BS minimum, MS preferred
