This position is in the Scientific Computing group at Corning’s main research facility. In this role you will write software that assists scientists in making the next materials breakthrough. Part of the work will be a on a team of software developers creating large internal infrastructure projects, on other projects you may work closely with our scientists on an individual basis. Our software development group is part of our research division. As such we expect our applications to be of high quality, but do not have on call requirements for our developers. This position can be remote if the applicant desires.

 

Scope of Position:

• In your software development role, you will be participating on individual projects and team projects to enhance the scientific and modeling capabilities of Corning.

• You will work with your team to define project specifications.

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent work experience.

 

Programming Skills – 10+ years:

• Experience in multiple programming languages including python.

• Working with databases (relational and non-relational). o Choosing appropriate db technologies o Creating efficient table structures o Using SQL to query and manage databases.

• Using web frameworks such as Django, Flask

• Building frontend clients using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript frameworks such as Vue

• Front and back end testing

• Api development

 

Team Skills:

• Comfortable being a lead developer

• Experience mentoring junior developers

• Experience working with UI/UX design and QA teams.

 

Desired Skills:

• Desire to learn explore new technologies.

• Familiar with data visualization tools, such as D3.js / Bokeh / matplotlib.

• Strong math and science skills.

 

Strong Interpersonal, Presentation and Leadership Skills:

• Experience communicating outside of the organization

• Adept at working in environments with significant ambiguity and an ability to explore and drive to clear requirements

• Able to interact effectively with customers and staff

 

Soft Skills:

• Ability to cultivate a diverse and inclusive environment built on credibility, visibility, and trust while presenting and selling concepts to internal customers.

• Willingness to take initiative and get results.
