The individual as a Senior Development Scientist will lead and support projects and provide technical leadership for ceramic process development and deliver processes and products to the advance optics business. This person will develop new processes to meet the requirements of different segments in the AO businesses. This role will focus on process development activities to enhance materials performance; processes will be developed (powder processing, forming, solid state sintering) to produce desired products. In addition, the individual should also be able to provide technical support to research and division engineering, manufacturing organizations through transferring processes and knowledge as necessary. The person is expected to have broad technical skills and experience as well as strong interpersonal skills to work with interdisciplinary teams of diverse cultural, educational and ethnic backgrounds. In addition, the individual is expected to have good presentation and excellent communication skills. Some travel is required.


Day-to-Day Responsibilities

1. Develop new processes based on fundamental science with specific focus in chemistry, powder processing, forming and sintering.

2. Engage in process R&D work including experimental planning, execution, data analysis, and communicating results providing impact.

3. Collaborate with research and division engineering and operational groups in developing and transferring fundamental understandings from evaluating new process and/or product concepts and be the champion for new process technology adoption.

4. Lead technicians as required and be responsible for their daily activities.


Travel Requirements

up to 50% short term and 10-20% long term


Hours of work/work schedule/flextime

Normal hours 8:00am-5:00pm; could have after-hours meetings/teleconferences as needed.


Required Education

Ph.D. degree in Physical/inorganic Chemistry, Ceramics or Materials Science with 2-3 years of relevant experience or Masters in Physical Chemistry, Ceramics or Materials Science with minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience.


Required Skills

1. Demonstrated expertise in ceramic and glass process development.

2. Solid background in first principles of inorganic materials formulation and processing technology (compositions, milling/mixing, rheology, sintering) with emphasis on glass and ceramics.

3. Demonstrated experience with glass and ceramic sintering process equipment

4. Data analysis and ability to correlate data to real-life applications.

5. Ability to take ideas from concept to implementation with a strong emphasis on applications, scale up, piloting and plant trials.

6. Experience resolving complex problems based on theoretical analysis and structured problem-solving methodology.

7. Hands-on experimental skills, including use of ceramic forming and sintering equipment

8. Ability to develop, scale, and transfer technology across research, development, engineering, and manufacturing.

9. Ability to work with people of diverse technical and cultural backgrounds.

10. Ability to collaborate across organizational boundaries with effective communication skills throughout all levels of the organization.


Desired Skills

1. Expertise in glass optical metrology methodologies.

2. Familiar and conscientious of clean processing of advance materials

3. Broad exposure to flame fluid dynamic modeling for ceramic synthesis

4. Broad understanding of different ceramic processing technologies

5. Structured problem-solving techniques and applied statistics

6. 2+ years leading technical and engineering project teams in formal project management systems.

7. Familiar with basics of manufacturing processes

8. Ability to Prioritization and/or multi-tasking
