The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.



  • This is a controls engineering position within the Advanced Optics (AO) Division Engineering group.
  • The role will service controls needs in any of the AO plants.


Scope of Position:

  • A member of a multi-disciplined engineering department and will run individual projects as well as work on project teams.
  • The work takes place within a high-quality specialty glass manufacturing plant. Project scope, cost, and schedule development are required.
  • Handling these same areas on active projects is required.
  • Develop electronic instrumentation calibration procedures.
  • Design and implement production equipment, measurement, and control systems for manufacturing high quality specialty glass.
  • Control systems include a DCS process control system, PLCs for sequential logic and single loop control.
  • Develop software and/or use applications to support manufacturing and analysis of equipment, products, processes, and experiments.
  • Design and support installation of electrical power distribution within the manufacturing facility.
  • Projects typically focus on: yield, efficiency, and cycle time improvements, troubleshooting, downtime reduction, cost reduction, improving resource or process capability.
  • New or enhanced equipment capability Work is related to government and military contracts as well as products for the semiconductor, display, and commercial telescopic mirrors applications.
  • Performs a variety of duties in the electronic, mechanical, electromechanical, or optical areas Constructs, solves problems, calibrates, adjusts, tests, and maintains equipment, components, devices, or systems.
  • Works from schematics, engineering drawings, and written or verbal instructions. Operates related equipment; conducts tests and reports data in prescribed format.



  • Controls engineering responsibilities include establishing project scope requirements, concept development followed by system design, vendor selection, fabrication and test, installation, and startup for complete integrated controls systems for development and manufacturing applications.
  • Solutions must meet customer technical requirements, and requirements for cost and schedule.
  • Performs calibration and alignment checks; makes adjustments, modifications, and replacements as directed; prepares prescribed compounds and solutions.


Travel & Hours:

  • Travel and on-site work at any AO plants and facilities is required for this position. Expect 30% - 90% domestic travel depending on home plant location (90% - Corning, 65% - Fairport, 30% - Canton).
  • Some international travel may be required depending on project assignment.
  • Working times will vary depending on the plant and project.
  • A minimum of 40 hours per week is expected with additional time required to satisfy project requirements.


Required Education & Experience:

  • We require a Bachelor of Science, Electrical Engineering or higher
  • We are seeking several years of experience working in a manufacturing environment is required
  • Leadership and project management skills
  • Problem solving skills and solid hands on approach Hands on experience with computers, motion control systems, PLC programming, and data acquisition.
  • Working knowledge of National Electric Code, NFPA 79, NFPA 70E, including overload protection, fault current analysis, and arc flash analysis.
  • Experience with advanced control theory, calibration and standards, and design and safety codes (above).
  • Solid understanding of: electrical and control systems, systems programming, logic and process control, user documentation and communication.
  • CAD skills; power, load flow, and short circuit


Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Emerson DeltaV programming knowledge
  • Should enjoy applied engineering in a real-world setting.
  • Work with production and maintenance workers in a unionized setting (i.e. able to work in a union plant with union employees).
  • Receive project level direction and execute tasks on own.
  • Communicate priorities and give direction to others.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
