Scope of Position:

  • Broaden and extend Corning Inc.’s competency in the field of Glass Ion Exchange (IOX)system design, development, and implementation for a variety of manufacturing systems.
  • The individual will work closely with the IOX internal technical teams and equipment suppliers to develop and to improve IOX equipment process capabilities for interior and glazing products and then transfer these capabilities to manufacturing operations.
  • The individual will provide specifications and recommendation to equipment supplier to improve overall glass handling, increase line speeds and cost opportunities.
  • In addition, the individual will utilize their experience and skill set to conceptualize IOX equipment that optimizes process capability.
  • This position will be responsible for providing equipment and process support during IOX technology introductions / startups and qualifications and continual improvements.
  • The individual is expected to have broad technical skills and experience as well as strong interpersonal skills to work with people of diverse cultural and technical background in worldwide locations of Corning Incorporated.
  • In addition, to ensure and complete Job Safety Analyses for new equipment introductions.

 

Day-to-Day Responsibilities:

  • Work in cross functional teams and apply traditional project methodologies of performance.
  • Interface with Development, Engineering, and equipment supplier Teams to design and develop IOX system.
  • Interface with Development and Plant Engineering to define and lead experimental trials of new products, processes, and technology.
  • Provide technical leadership and subject matter expertise in IOX process and equipment design.
  • Support technology assessments of IOX systems / concepts based on fundamental science and apply the fundamentals and engineering principles to minimize glass defects, reduce cycle time and cost
  • Engage in the manufacturing process development work including experiment planning, data analysis & reporting results.
  • Collaborate with Development groups in advancing fundamental understanding & evaluating new process and/or product ideas.
  • Lead scale-up and transfer of feasible technologies to manufacturing.
  • Interact with Development and Manufacturing Teams to determine product and process requirements.
  • Identify low cost manufacturing opportunities that maintain the specified quality level.
  • Design and develop new processes or improve existing processes at Corning facilities worldwide
  • Use hands-on approach to solve problems and improve processes /equipment based on fundamental understanding and structured problem-solving methods such as KT, Designed Experimentation, or Six Sigma
  • Implement Process Control and Process Discipline systems into manufacturing operations
  • Analyze process data using statistical tools (e.g. pareto, regression, time charting, analysis of variance, gauge R&R, etc.)
  • Measure and communicate performance against established objectives
  • Review and interpret data to make recommendations on immediate actions, long term corrective actions, follow-up experiments, etc.

 

Role within the Group:

  • To design, build, integrate and start-up of IOX systems at new glass facilities.
  • Verify equipment print packages, installation, and safety requirements
  • Identify, define, and install IOX-related equipment engineering cost reduction activities.
  • Interface with cassette team to understand and implement low cost, friendly cassette solutions for AI product portfolio
  • Supervise equipment build and FAT at vendor facility
  • Support site preparation, installation, SAT, Start-up and Early Production Coverage
  • Developed salt management system (equipment / process)
  • Individual will be responsible for participating on cross-functional project teams, on early innovation stage projects, through concept generation/certification, technology development, detail design/build, and start-up in pilot or high-volume manufacturing.
  • Strong level of technical curiosity that will enable unique solutions to the technical challenges.
  • High level of fundamental understanding of the process and materials to enable the development of cost-effective products and finishing machine systems.
  • Ability to work in a team-based environment and participate on a highly matrixed project team
  • Understand how to integrate commercially available technologies and processes to enable Corning, Inc. to develop robust next generation process equipment solutions.
  • Able to effectively leverage external equipment suppliers and system integrators for detail design, build, and integration.
  • Be responsible for identification of project resources necessary to complete the project tasks and coordinate the project team’s efforts towards successfully achieving overall project objectives.
  • Procure, implement, and document systems and assist in training operational personnel.

Travel Requirements:

  • Estimate travel up to 35% depending upon specific project assignment.
  • Travel may be required during installation, debug, and start-up as well as for routine interaction with Customers and Suppliers.
  • This would be a combination of domestic and international travel.
  • International travel would most commonly be to Asia or Europe.

 

Education and Experience:

  • B.S./M.S./PhD in Technical Discipline (Mechanical Engineering preferred)
  • 5+ years in a technical field to include:
  • Mechanical design, Process / Product Development
  • Technology or Product Transfer (preferred)
  • IOX equipment design, build, installation debug (preferred)
  • IOX process experience (preferred)
