Purpose of the Position:

Applies knowledge of engineering principles and programming to develop and support advanced computer simulations for early-stage process and product improvement. Actively participates within and beyond department boundaries to resolve important process and product issues using numerical simulations and/or calculations. Enhances research, development and, engineering organizations’ capabilities and productivity through the development and transfer of new tools and methods. The candidate will work primarily in the field of solid mechanics (FEA) and multi-scale modeling with focus on fracture mechanics and structural dynamics to numerically evaluate, with the support of experiments, the fracture behavior and strength of glass, glass ceramic, and ceramic products.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Use knowledge of physics to build deep understanding of the materials and processes across Corning businesses
  • Apply solid mechanics, fracture mechanics, and/or reliability analysis to solve problems, make product recommendations, improve product designs, and understand/predict product performance creatively and proactively
  • Use expertise in numerical simulation and programming to prepare modeling tools and user interfaces for internal customers to use as development tools for improving product and processes
  • Use existing tools and develop new analytical and numerical models to resolve customer problems
  • Correlate simulation with experimental results
  • Support development and validation testing
  •  Partner closely with other simulation and experimental scientists/engineers across research, development, and engineering organizations
  • Communicate results both orally and in written form in clear, precise English
  • Protect Corning’s intellectual property by filing invention disclosures for patent application in timely fashion
  • Document important findings in internal, structured reports.

Education & Experience:

  • Master’s or PhD degree in Applied Physics / Mechanical Engineering / Engineering Mechanics
  • 2-5 years’ experience in Numerical Simulations

Required Skills:

  • Strong foundation in physics and engineering science with programming skills
  • Fracture Mechanics and/or glass mechanics simulation skills •
  • Creative, proactive, and innovative problem solving •
  • Self-starter, self- managing •
  • Results oriented and high commitment /energy

 

Desired Skills:

  • Experience using and programming in numerical simulation software o ABAQUS, COMSOL, ANSYS o Atomistic modeling capability (LAAMPS, Materials Studio, etc)
  • Fluency with one of these programming languages: Java, or Python
  • Strong skills in C/C++ and/or C# programming languages, Visual Studio .NET development environment, object-oriented programming
  • Programming experience, preferably in a MATLAB/Simulink environment
  • Experience in polymer, nonlinear material fracture mechanics
  • Knowledge of database and external programming interfaces preferred
  • Experimental/lab experience (designing and/or executing experiments, troubleshooting experimental setups, using modeling and experimental results to solve problems)
