Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group):


The candidate will lead projects within the Component and Systems Development group of the Corning Optical Communications Applied Research and Development department.

These projects apply our group’s expertise in optics, lasers sources, material science and precision mechanical engineering in early to mid-stage development of optical systems, optical components and manufacturing processes.

The candidate will design, model, assemble, analyze and test optical and photonic components and systems.

The candidate will conduct research and development into phases of physical optics, geometric optics, optical waveguides, fiber-optics, optical cables, optical connectors, lasers and laser material processing.

The candidate should be a scientist or engineer capable of combining optical physics and engineering principles to develop innovative complex optical systems and/or processes.  


Day to Day Responsibilities:

(3) Understands next generation technology and creates/develops/applies new technology and products

(4) Design optical and photonic components and systems based on requirements from a voice of customer analysis

(5) Develop component specifications, tolerances, simulations and tests procedures for optical and photonic components

(6) Identify sources for, and procure, components including sensors, lasers, fiber-optics, opto-mechanics and electronics

(7) Assemble or supervise / manage the assembly and verification testing of prototypes

(8) Use design-to-cost models, six sigma methodology and other methods to deliver optical design requirements

(9) Design and execute experiments to solve complex problems

(10) Build subject matter expertise in optics, materials, and laser processes

(11) Consult or collaborate with other subject matter experts across various business units, from research to manufacturing

(12) Document system designs and results; generate reports and file invention disclosures

(13) Make technical internal and external presentations to team members, customers and at conferences

(14) Lab organization and the ordering of components / equipment  


Travel Requirements (please note if international):

Comfortable with traveling up to 25% domestic or international  


Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

Full-time (40 hours per week) / Day shift  


Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration):

Ph.D preferred in physics or optical or electrical engineering with 10 years of relavent experience, or masters degree with 15 years of relevant experience  


Required Skills (These are skills that candidates MUST possess):


(1) Strong knowledge of optics, optical properties of materials, fiber optics and laser systems

(2) Understanding of optical metrology systems for measurment of optical, fiber-optic and photonic systems

(3) Working knowledge of light-matter interactions

(4) General understanding of radiometry and photometry

(5) Experience in numerical analysis techniques including optical modeling or beam propagation methods

(6) Solid problem solving skills and ability to perform complex data analysis

(7) Strong hands-on experimental skills in building free-space optical, fiber-optic and photonic systems

(8) Effective communicator, oral and written, in a variety of settings: one-on-one, small and large groups, with peers and management


Desired Skills (These are skills that would be nice for candidates to possess):


(1) Working knowledge of electronics

(2) Automation of measurement systems (using Labview, MATLAB, Python, etc.)

(3) Mechanical design and assembly of prototypes
