Position Description:

Advises and assists inventors with patent applications.  Acts on behalf of the patentee or inventor, defining the scope of the patent and extent of the claims.  Applies knowledge of global IP law to provide recommendations on project and program specific IP strategies.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with inventors and attorneys to draft high quality patent applications in accordance with established protocols
  • Negotiates directly with USPTO patent examiners to achieve valuable protection for Corning’s inventions
  • Instructs foreign counsel on how to negotiate with foreign patent offices concerning Corning patent applications worldwide
  • Understands the technology and inventions of the assigned businesses in order to conduct patent searches and draft targeted patent applications
  • Performs discrete, focused review of Corning’s patent portfolio to help make decisions on foreign filings and maintenance
  • Reviews prior art to help develop a position on client exposure
  • Provides advice on patent matters with oversight from Intellectual Property counsel

 

Required Education and Skills:

  • Must have passed the United States Patent and Trademark Office examination for registration to practice (law degree not required)
  • BS and/or advanced degree in relevant technology (Materials Science or Chemical Engineering degrees and background preferred, but other technical backgrounds and experience that correspond well with our materials and chemistry-related technologies will be considered)
  • Very good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to identify risks and recommend appropriate solutions consistent with the relevant risk tolerances of assigned business and the Company
  • Ability to reduce complexity to an actionable set of facts and decision points
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple simultaneous projects effectively
  • Comfortable interacting with inventors, managers and senior leadership

 

Required Experience:

  • 3+ years of experience collaborating with inventors and attorneys to draft and prosecute patent applications

 

Desired Experience:

  • Experience in a law firm
  • Prior technical experience e.g., engineering or other technical role in industry
  • Prior patent examiner experience at USPTO

 

Location and Travel Requirements:

  • Corning, NY
  • Up to 10% travel, domestic and international

The range for this position is  $105,822.00 - $145,505.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
