Scope of Position:

  • Broaden and extend Corning Inc.’s competency in the field of precision finishing machine systems design and finishing process development for implementation in applications ranging from laboratory scale prototype to plant floor level manufacturing systems.  Candidate for this position will be expected to possess and/or demonstrate the ability to promptly acquire the process and mechanical engineering competencies required to blueprint precision finishing processes and corresponding equipment for projects ranging from early stage conceptual generation to pilot / high volume manufacturing start-up.  
  • The candidate will be expected to be familiar with development, promotion, and implementation of unique finishing machine systems designs for addressing non-classical finishing applications in a manner consistent with precision engineering principles and practices within Corning.  The individual must also demonstrate clear understanding of micron level machine systems procedures and possess both the ability to develop corresponding machine specifications as well as the ability to utilize state of the art analysis software tools to design or direct the design and analysis of said machine systems.   Project management competency for applications from concept to certification and installation of systems at a manufacturing location strongly desired.
  • Individual will be responsible for participating on cross-functional project teams the scopes of which may range from early innovation stage to concept generation/certification, technology development, detailed design/build, and pilot scale start-up as well as high volume manufacturing.  High level requirements for an individual working in this position include:
    • Solid fundamental understanding of processes and materials to enable development of finishing machine systems that deliver high quality products in a cost-effective manner
    • Strong level of technical curiosity driving solutions for unique technical challenges
    • Strong work ethic employing data driven methodology with emphasis on generating actionable results 
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills including oral presentation skills and documentation practices for Intellectual Property (IP) development in the form of invention disclosures and restricted technical reports
    • Strong networking skills for building effective internal and external networks
    • Ability to work in highly matrixed interdepartmental as well as external project team environments 
    • Ability to execute project assignments with minimal supervision
    • Project management skills including (but not limited to) defining project scope, identification of critical resources, crafting corresponding budgets, scheduling, and cost estimation
    • Manage multiple projects - plan, prioritize, and set goals to guide actions

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Work within existing project teams to aid in solving mechanical engineering and finishing process challenges to benefit project sponsors
  • Interface and work with the Research, Development and Manufacturing teams involved in innovation and manufacture of new products and machine systems for any Division of Corning including Display Technologies, Environmental Technologies, Life Sciences, Mobile Consumer Electronics, Optical Communications, Pharmaceutical Technology, and Science and Technology
  • Design and analysis of first generation / next generation products, machines, and machine components for robustness of precision finishing system design from material selection, analysis, and behavior perspectives
  • Utilization of internal laboratory facilities and equipment to demonstrate proofs of concept
  • Interfacing with external suppliers to specify and procure corresponding precision elements including fixtures and machine components
  • Interfacing with internal project receivers and internal trades personnel to set systems up and make them functional
  • Documentation of work in the form of internal reporting (timely presentation of results to project receivers as requested) and Intellectual Property development in the form of restricted technical reports and invention disclosures
  • Presentation of associated project work for review by peers, internal receivers, external customers, and managers up to and including Corning Senior Management
  • Execution of project management duties including record maintenance, estimating task time, monitoring performance against schedules, and tracking expenditures against budgeted funds
  • Consult with and/or advise system integrators and/or external sub-contractors in development of new precision finishing machine systems
  • Procure, implement and document processing systems and assist in training operational personnel

 

Travel Requirements:

  • Individuals applying for this position should expect 10% - 30% travel depending upon specific project assignments.  Travel may be required during installation, debug, and start-up as well as for routine interaction with Customers and Suppliers.

 

Required Education:

  • B.S. Degree in Technical Discipline required
  • M.S. / PhD Degrees in Technical Discipline preferred

 

Experience Requirements: 

  • Minimum 10 years in a technical field to include:
    • Process and/or Equipment Engineering or Product Development 
    • Project or Engineering Management
    • Technology or Product Transfer
    • Supervisory Experience

 

Critical Technical Skills Requirements:

  • Technical expertise in the field of design and development of precision finishing machine systems dedicated to glass and/or ceramic materials processing
  • Systematic approach to problem solving employing experimental design and statistical analysis
  • Ability to integrate commercially available technologies and processes to develop robust, next generation finishing process equipment solutions
  • Ability to effectively leverage external machine fabricators and systems integrators to generate detailed design, build, and integration of machine systems
  • Understanding semiconductor materials processing and corresponding machine systems preferred
  • Management of technical interfaces between Corning and OEMs to enable success in emerging technology ventures
