Purpose of the Position:

To provide process development expertise for research & development projects related to optical thin films by vacuum deposition processes. Provide technical expertise related to vacuum deposition process development at manufacturing locations. Provide optical thin film design support to projects from early research stage to manufacturing production. Lead and/or work with internal customer projects and process improvement activities.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities: 

  • Designs and executes process experiments, characterizes, compiles, and analyzes data, process design and optimization. Apply that knowledge to develop and maintain programs to support new innovation in product & processes.
  • Perform optical thin film design to support development and potential research and/or engineering efforts in areas of coatings (vacuum and atmosphere deposition) on glass, glass-ceramics, ceramics and semiconductor substrates.
  • Collaborates with resources from various disciplines (research, engineering, manufacturing, characterization, analysis, modeling). Work with Process Techs or be hands on (as and when needed) to perform experiments, production line problem identification and solving.
  • Apply technical understanding of coating process fundamentals to create practical improvements in product and/or process value drivers.
  • Ensure successful transfer and maintenance of new technologies in manufacturing.
  • Develop and maintain a positive working relationship with both internal personnel and vendors.
  • Effective documentation of internal reports, operating procedures, specifications, decision analysis, and changes.
  • Defines opportunities for intellectual property creation and files invention disclosures and patent applications.
  • Work with company resources to assure a safe work environment for current and new processes, and compliance to Corning’s environmental policy.

 

Education & Experience: Bachelor or MS in Optics, physics, materials science or related science/engineering field with industrial experience in the area of thin films.

 

Required Skills:

  • Optical thin film design experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of vacuum and atmosphere deposition processes (including hands on experience with pilot level processes) and metrology methods.
  • Knowledge of common industrial processes and testing protocols for coatings.
  • Knowledgeable of optical metrology methods (Interferometer, Spectrometer, ellipsometry, etc.).
  • Effective communication and presentation skills to all levels in the organization.
  • Commitment to drive for results with minimal supervision.

 

Desired Skills:

  • Familiar with optical thin film design software, such as Macleod or others.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and coordinate a cross-functional team.
  • Project management skills.
  • Basics of Manufacturing and Other Analysis Tools (KT) trained Six Sigma: Green or Black Belt trained.

 

Soft Skills:

  • Strong communication skills.
  • Requires outstanding customer service skills.
  • Goes out of way to meet customer requests.
  • Prioritization and/or multi-tasking ability.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, and work with outside vendors, engineers, and technicians.

 

Work Schedule: 40 hours/week

 

Travel Requirements: 10-30% Domestic and International travel depending on the project.
