The individual as a Sr Process Development Scientist will lead and support projects and provide technical leadership for ceramic process development and deliver processes and products to the Advanced Optics business. This person will develop new processes to meet the requirements of different segments in the AO businesses. This role will focus on ceramic sintering process development activities to enhance materials performance. In addition, the individual should also be able to provide work closely with other functions such as Research and Division Engineering, Manufacturing organizations through collaboration as necessary. The person is expected to have broad technical skills and strong interpersonal skills to work with interdisciplinary teams of diverse backgrounds. In addition, the individual is expected to have good presentation and excellent communication skills. 30-50% travel is required.

 

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Develop new processes based on fundamental understanding with specific focus in powder processing and sintering
  • Knowledge of mechanical failure mechanisms of ceramics and/or glass is desirable
  • Engage in process development work including experimental planning, execution, data analysis, and communicating results providing impact.
  • Collaborate with research and operational groups in developing and transferring fundamental understandings from evaluating new process and/or product concepts
  • Lead technicians as required and work with them to achieve desired results

 

Required Education:

  • Ph.D. degree in Physical/inorganic Chemistry, Ceramics or Materials Science with 0-3 years of relevant experience

 

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated expertise in ceramic and/or glass sintering process development.
  • Solid background in first principles of inorganic materials formulation and processing technology (compositions, milling/mixing, rheology, sintering).
  • Data analysis and ability to correlate data to real-life applications.
  • Hands-on experimental skills, including use of ceramic forming and sintering equipment
  • Ability to strategize and think critically about experimental design and technical pathways

 

Desired Skills

  • Expertise in glass optical metrology methodologies
  • Background in mechanical failure of inorganic solids
  • Familiar and conscientious of clean processing of advance materials
  • Broad understanding of different ceramic processing technologies
  • Structured problem-solving techniques and applied statistics
  • Familiar with basics of manufacturing processes

 

Soft Skills

  • Ability to work independently and with cross-functional teams
  • Strong collaboration mindset
  • Strong communication skills - Oral and written with strong presentation skills
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with multi-functional teams spanning research to manufacturing
  • Ability to translate complex technical objectives into an executable action plan with some supervision/guidance.

 

Travel Requirements:

  • 30-50%

The range for this position is  $77,078.00   -  $105,983.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
