Scope of Position

  • The candidate will work on materials modeling projects within the Manufacturing, Technology, and Engineering organization in Corning Incorporated and apply them to projects across various existing and new businesses. This candidate will conduct research and development into the simulation of complex material systems such as polymers, ceramics, and glasses with a focus towards materials properties and interactions of these systems. The candidate will focus on fundamental understanding and delivering solutions using tools such as Molecular Dynamics, Monte Carlo Ab initio simulations and Multiscale Modeling. A strong expertise in programming is preferred.


Day to Day responsibilities:

  • Identify relevant physics, implement models to analyze material systems, work with experimental labs to validate and improve models, and provide recommendations to projects.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to solve challenging and complex problems.
  • Participate on cross-functional teams to develop and test hypotheses related to materials understanding.
  • Communicate work with stakeholders both in written and spoken format and document findings with internal and external publications or Intellectual Property filings.
  • Deliver results in a team environment and delegate work when required.



  • Infrequent; potentially up to 10%, domestic and international.


Required Education and Experience:

  • PhD in Material Science/ Chemical Engineering/ Mechanical Engineering.


Required Skills:

  • Demonstrated experience and strong technical knowledge in materials modeling.
  • Experience in working with either polymers, glasses, ceramics, or metals.
  • Fundamental understanding of atomistic modeling and experience in at least one of MD, DFT, ab initio or multiscale approaches.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively on diverse teams.
  • Ability to collaborate closely with scientific community, business leaders, and management.


Desired skills:

  • Experience of generating pair potentials from Ab initio simulations.
  • Understanding and experience in the area of complexities of surface phenomena.
  • Experience with multiscale modeling.
  • Strong track record of peer reviewed publications.
  • Strong programming skills with any language like: python, C, C++, MATLAB.
