Corning is vital to progress – in the industries we help shape and in the world we share.

We invent life-changing technologies using materials science. Our scientific and manufacturing expertise, boundless curiosity, and commitment to purposeful invention place us at the center of the way the world interacts, works, learns, and lives.

Our sustained investment in research, development, and invention means we’re always ready to solve the toughest challenges alongside our customers.

Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group):
This internship is aimed at exploring durable liquid-like surfaces (LLS) on glass substrates for anti-fingerprinting touch applications. The candidate will lead surface coating and characterization efforts designed to shed light on the ability of LLS to convey anti-fingerprinting properties. Coating methods include spin-coating, vapor-deposition, dip-coating, and any other coating processes deemed relevant. Characterization includes contact angle measurements and surface energy mapping, development of fingerprint transfer quantification methodology, durability assessments, and optical measurements such as UV-Vis transmission and reflection.

Day to Day Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include the design of experiments to shed light on the behavior of LLS coatings towards anti-fingerprinting properties. Responsibilities also include the execution of these experiments, including particular attention paid to glass cleanliness and control over LLS deposition. Once fabricated, the surfaces will be characterized using a variety of measurements to determine the efficacy of these films towards mitigating fingerprint transfer. The data that is generated will need to be analyzed and interpreted, conclusions reached, and next steps determined. The intern’s work will need to be presented in project/group meetings to get input from colleagues including alternative explanations and next steps.
